I don't get the whole Labubu thing. I'm totally out of the loop on this. Can someone explain it to me? Is it a character from a game or an anime or what? Why did it blow up so much? Was it just viral marketing? What's so great about them? Do they do anything?

I feel like an out of touch grandpa when it comes to some internet culture stuff. The consequence of not being on the big social media platforms i guess.

i'm not an enthusiast either, but i see them as "chinese furbys"...some people consider them "chinese funkos"

Furbys did things though.

Labubu feels like these naked troll dolls, but somehow they blew up and the trolls didn't

looking about labubu, it seems like he makes part of a collection of "cute evil creatures" but he's the most popular

I think they're supposed to be "things that are cute because they're intentionally ugly" like in a gremlin sort of way. They're sort of just meaningless trinkets akin to a thousand of others that you collect, akin to funkos or furbys or whatever else. They are just kinda easy to like for The Average Joe(tm) so all they needed was a strong social media push which I think they got. But this is just my take on it.

A community about anything related to Korea, such as news about the countries (DPRK and south), discussion, photos and videos, the language, etc.

See also: !juchegang@lemmygrad.ml, which is intended for memes rather than serious discussion of these topics.

The picture of this Lemmy community is magnolia (목란), the national flower of the DPRK. The background picture is a scenery of Pyongyang.

Rules:

  1. No imperialist apologia. The DPRK didn't start the war. US imperialist invasion was not justified. Neither are their army bases in south Korea. The sanctions were and are not justified.

  2. Be respectful. The imperialist media likes to describe the DPRK people as completely brainwashed, and that it'd be fine to completely destroy that country in an invasion. Don't act like the imperialist media.

  3. Be skeptical of your sources. Don't trust the media that has been known to report many falsehoods about Korea already. (You may still link to them if they write something interesting / worth reading, just be careful.)
