Home Network (lemmy.world)

Hi All,

Focusing on privacy and open standards, can anyone suggest network elements from switches routers to IoT like doorbells and lights.

Obviously home assistant for coordination.

For network hardware I think the best you can do is try to find a router with taiwanese manufacturing and components (microtik? a latvian router manufacturer)

For IoTs there’s the ZigBee standard and more recently the thread standard for radio communication between the devices and the server so read up on those.

it’s possible to find some stuff with nordic semionductor chips in them, (eve energy, eufy smart lock e30, DIY development kits) but mostly youre stuck with us and china based silicon. There are many european companies. Ikea, Shelly being the most famous ones.

I'd like to emphasise not using wifi for smart home. With wifi you have to block your devices from the internet, with zigbee there's no internet connection at all. Or even TCP/IP.

For core home network, I want modems, APs, switches etc made in EU. I don't trust anything outside of EU anymore.

Start with home assistant and then make sure that every piece of iot you add in your network is compatible with it
