The fact that so many of you think this is about the cars your drive is a great indicator of how successful neoliberal propaganda has been in framing climate change to liberals. Industrial carbon emissions are not only multiples times higher than whatever we're all doing with our cars, it has also increased according to Canada's own report. Private jets from one rich asshole outpaces us all. This is not a community issue about the use of electric vehicles, it is us versus the wealthiest people who don't even have to fucking drive themselves places.

Indeed, one of the most ironic things about the "Buy Canadian" movement is that the only way we know how to resist fascism is through consumption of differently branded products.

That doesn't stop me from buying Canadian of course, but it shows how few options neoliberalism gives us to protect our sovereignty.

I'm liberal. Open source EVs I can own and without the nonsense overhead of corrupt manufacturing. New ice vehicles are proprietary connected garbage too.

Without standardization where parts are second and third source available, and any shade tree mechanic can service it, this is a dystopian nightmare with no future. This stupid oversight is poised to create extreme poverty and wealth disparity. Every connected proprietary car has no long term value and will never be some kid's first car. It will never be the single mom's car, or the elderly man's. All of these people and circumstances are what have been sold out to lower levels of poverty than anything witnessed in over a century. I care about these people. Fuck proprietary cars and all authoritarians on the Right and Left. Intelligent people are liberal and smart enough to say I don't have all the answers, and no one else does either. People with strong opinions and bold answers are the biggest monsters, harming everyone on the margins outside of their limited perspective view. I'm all for effective solutions, but I'm not selling autonomy and self determination to get there.

This post isn't about liberals, it's about Liberals, the political party in Canada.

They recently announced 5 major projects they were going to fund, one of which is related to increasing LNP (aka Liquid Natural Gas, aka methane) production. They said they are considering a high-speed rail corridor in the second phase of projects, but increasing the amount of methane Canada can produce/sell was a higher priority.

I will preface this saying that I respect Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, I would gladly vote for him in my riding.

Though it sounds like you’re concerned about the lower amounts of repairability in evs, the loss of manufacturing to Chinese automotive companies and tankies and fascists misleading the Canadian public. All are valid concerns.

However I think you’re mistaken as the horse-theory does not apply in every context, Ireland has as many as 9 political parties and is functioning as a state fairly well. Also I have accounts on Fedia, infosec and Lemmy.cafe. I’m pretty much strongly anti-tankie.

It probably has more to do with my situation and survival. My fam is lib-Right -ish. I'm lib Left. To me, liberal is "liberty for individuals." Fuck businesses. Those are not people. Those have no rights. Killing them is an honorable pastime. Like you have a right to an upper middle class life in relative freedom. Getting a new ice vehicle may be stupid in some cases, but getting a used vehicle or simply driving hours for longer is much better for the environment than getting a new electric or hybrid car.There are also situations where electric vehicles don't make sense, aside from how bad they are for the environment when they are manufactured. They also don't do well in extreme environments, specifically in cold, compared to gas and diesel engines.

I saw a huge truck the other day when getting some groceries. There was a handicap tag hanging from the rear view mirror. Then a maybe 5' tall old lady starts trying to get into the truck. It just defeats me that this is the culture we are fighting against because it's so stupid in the first place.

My wife and I make over $150k combined income in Canada. We genuinely wanted an EV. The cheapest EV was $48k msrp for the base model. Interest rates were at 6%+. We could have bought 2 ICE vehicles for this. We settled on the cheapest plugin hybrid since it was all we could afford. And it’s too expensive.

True however you can use that experience to discuss the issues you faced with ev adoption with your mlas and mps. As they’re not doing enough in assisting the greener transition. A woman I heard has regretted not speaking up for an apartment building meeting about the proposed charger install concept when so many residents came out to oppose it, there was no one who said something in favour of evs. However she later got an ev and has ever since had trouble accessing the busy public charging stations around her. We need more support from the people and the government on bevs.

Contacting MPs is futile. They don’t respond or even read the messages they receive. If you try calling in, they keep you on hold for 30+ minutes and then let you record a message. The issue is intertwined with our economy so no amount of messages from people is going to make a difference. Most of the country has less means and they certainly have other things to get mad about other than affordable EVs. It’s a luxury.

nothing is futile, convince other voters that the MP isn't listening and shouldn't be your representative anymore. if your mind is set for giving up on government action, then support third party organizations that build ev chargers and teach people how to run and maintain them and stuff. i agree that we need more accountability for elected officials, but to get electoral reform you still need your MP to vote for it. i don't think it's good to completely give up on participating as a citizen within a state, though we still need some direct action as a form of direct democracy outside of established structures and systems

Ah yes the “do nothing” when our future is at stake with climate change. Everything we need will become more expensive than it is now if we do nothing about climate change today.

People making the false dichotomy of “affordability vs climate action” both can be done.

We need to increase the pressure on ev adoption to lower the costs for everyone and which will save everyone money in powering their trips to work not to mention the less repairs evs require compared to ice vehicles.
