John Miller and his associate Cui Guanghai were being held in Serbia for extradition to the United States but removed their electronic tags and escaped.

A businessman from Kent accused of spying for China and plotting to smuggle sensitive military technology to the People’s Liberation Army has escaped house arrest in Serbia along with his alleged handler while awaiting extradition to the US.

John Miller, 63, was arrested in April along with Cui Guanghai, 43, a Chinese citizen who was based in the US, while on a business trip in Belgrade, at the request of the FBI after a sting operation.

The High Court in Belgrade told The Times that Miller, a recruitment specialist from Tunbridge Wells, and Cui, a Chinese government official, who were staying in separate flats and were banned from leaving their properties, removed their electronic tags and fled.

It is unclear when the pair fled, but the court issued an arrest warrant for the pair on August 15, and the authorities do not know if they are still in Serbia.

More serious politics should go in [email protected].

Try not to spam the same link to multiple feddit.uk communities.
Pick the most appropriate, and put it there.

Posts should be related to UK-centric news, and should be either a link to a reputable source, or a text post on this community.

Opinion pieces are also allowed, provided they are not misleading/misrepresented/drivel, and have proper sources.

If you think "reputable news source" needs some definition, by all means start a meta thread.

Posts should be manually submitted, not by bot. Link titles should not be editorialised.

Disappointing comments will generally be left to fester in ratio, outright horrible comments will be removed.
Message the mods if you feel something really should be removed, or if a user seems to have a pattern of awful comments.
