Reading the article felt like a throwback to a more quaint time, when players still identified with their clubs and the likes of Bayern or Ajax still felt like teams with a strong regional identity.

It's somewhat true for Ajax still. Out of the 15 players that played during their last league match I believe four have previously played for Ajax at a youth level. While that's no longer on the level it used to be, it's still better than many other clubs. I think Ajax were forced back into this role as they have now essentially become a feeder club for the bigger leagues.
