So, perhaps I’m wrong, but this kind of makes me feel like people are saying, “I’m not sure I want to drop $60 dollars for a family of four (before concessions) for a movie we might not like. But a classic? the kids should see that on the big screen!”

Ok, I'm going to date myself here, but I miss Rep Houses. When / where I grew up, we had three different Rep Houses with in an hour or so, that played a different double bill every night of the week. We'd pick up the poster/calendars show what was going to show each night for the next three months and circle the movies we'd have to see, note which Friday and Saturday might be just for fun.
Theater was created as a communal experience. Even when potentates could have totally private performances they preferred to go to the theater and enjoy the play with other people.
That's why so many TV comedies had laugh tracks.
