I could understand streamlining the products maybe, they offer a lot of different stuff, but shutting the whole fucking thing down? Fuck YOU! Yves veggie dogs are the best. Sell the brand to somebody. Someone start a gofundme or something, we'll crowd fund it. The government should step in and nationalize the brand as a public service to all Canadians. I don't care if this is realistic. I reject this reality and substitute my own.

NOOOO those veggie dogs are the perfect drunk/high food.

did you know a TON of brewers use fish bladders in their brewing process? most vegans don’t…

Uh oh. That's our favourite ground tofu.

Same here! Makes a great taco filling! So fucking pissed at this capitalist bullshit, fuck your portfolio and give us better vegan/vegetarian options! My trip to Berlin a few years ago was eye opening. Their fake meat selection is outstanding.

[-] [email protected] 4 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah, we use it to make vegan chili and tacos too.

I'm honestly curious, why can't you just buy a block of tofu, press it, and crumble it yourself?

I'm not trying to inject any type of snide attitude I'm genuinely interested because I love to cook and I like tofu. I just have never used this product being talked about so I'm not certain what the difference would be.

It's certainly doable. They just had a really nice ground beef flavour tofu that was literally perfect IMO. I guess we'll have to DIY from now on.

If they meant the ground "beef" it wasn't so much tofu as Texturized Vegetable Protein. Honestly it is a highly processes food product and normal tofu is probably better for you

Brutal.

Not that I buy a lot of faux meat products these days (they got too expensive), but these guys were a staple brand for my family for years.

Oh no. Now the mainstream grocery store offerings will mostly be Daiya etc which are American. Time to go back to making my own creations with tofu.

Granted they're owned by American Hain-Celestial so hopefully a truly Canadian company can grow in their place.

[-] [email protected] 6 points 2 weeks ago

Isn't Daiya based in BC, and owned by a Japanese pharmaceutical company?

[-] [email protected] 1 points 2 weeks ago

Thank you for this! I assumed that Daiya had been bought out by American interests since it is so readily available in the US but you are correct it is BC based and Japanese owned. I don't like their cheese substitutes since they have that coconut oil taste but this is great info

There is the Montreal-based company Gusta seemingly ready to swoop in with some new products, I'm cautiously hyped

There’s Earth’s Own based in BC.

Not sure where abouts you live, but Big Mountain is a brand I see in the stores here in Calgary often. Think they're based in B.C..

Their products have been hit or miss for me, the veggie burgers were alright, but the "bites" were something I didn't enjoy at all, though that's likely personal preference more than anything.

They make plant-based sausages, though I've yet to give those a try.

I used to love this brand when I was vegan! It's sad to see them go. :((

[-] [email protected] 6 points 2 weeks ago

I love this brand and I've never been vegan(or vegetarian)

Was always nice that there were options for those who needed them

[-] [email protected] 1 points 2 weeks ago

Most of their products were just not that good, or just didn't hold up to modern standards. For this faux meat category, it feels like they were competitive before 2020, but since then, there are way better products from other brands with less processed, better ingredients like Big Mountain Foods, and Yves stuff just doesn't even come close to them IMHO.

The upside here is that a lot of precious shelf space in the vegan meat/cheese section is going to open up for these other Canadian brands to fill. Here's hoping that it gets filled with better quality products from Canadian companies.
