Yeah, Season 3 of Lost in Space wasn't great overall (there are a few gems, but it's a real step down from Seasons 1-2) and that episode takes the cake for most cringe-worthy.

A neat way to watch TOS is to read what was happening in the world at the time.
Many episodes are a commentary on the Vietnam War which was heavily in the headlines at the time. Several episodes directly parallel what was happening in Vietnam at the time.
