The police department said that the attack isn't related to Vogler's status as an elected official.

"Based on the investigation at the time of this release, the victim and the suspect are known to each other and the attack stems from a personal matter not related to the victim’s position on Danville City Council or any other political affiliation," DPD said.

whoa

Southwest Virginia-based publication Showcase Magazine owner and publisher Andrew Brooks posted a video on social media, saying that Vogler was at the magazine's office when a man forced his way inside.

According to Brooks, the man was carrying a five-gallon container of gas and poured it over Vogler.

"Lee attempted to flee, ran to the front of the building," Brooks said in the video. "The individual followed him and set him on fire."

The police department's reported witness account of the incident aligned with Brooks' account. They said the suspect fled the scene, but police stopped his vehicle and took him into custody. DPD identified the suspect as 29-year-old Shotsie Michael Buck Hayes.

Danville, VA is like pop 50K and the middle of nowhere, NC border town. a place outside the northern boundary of the Piedmont Atlantic megaregion.... fastest growing region (by population) in the US.

anyway, lugging around actual gallons of gasoline, dumping it on someone in public, and chasing them to light them on fire is fucking wild. beyond rage.

Beyond Rage would make a great horror movie. The entire plot is Americans trying to kill each other in ways like that. It's so perverse that the movie doesn't have a single gun.

Already have that. It's called The Purge series

[-] MolotovHalfEmpty@hexbear.net 7 points 6 months ago

And before that John Romero's The Crazies (which is still better)

I only watched the first one and a bit of the second one. I don't think did stuff like carry around lots of gas to pour on other people. Do they? Also - lots of guns.

The world building and politics of the series gets better. Election Year and the one about the first purge are definitely leftwing. A lot of discussions on race and class you wouldn't expect from a home invasion slasher film B-movie sequel.

"In a world... Where guns out number people... The only way to send a message, is to make it personal! This summer, grindhouse films beings you the most brutal case of revenge ever captured on film! Nick Everyman (Daniel Radcliffe) has been crossed for the last time, and now he's BEYOND RAGE™️. Bare witness as he hacks, slashes, and burns down his foes for 90 gut busting minutes!"

I was bored when I read the news article, so I searched for possible motives. The councilman's colleague that called 911 said that "no amount of pain should drive somebody to violence". There is a photo of the councilman on his social media with the attacker and his wife at a fair and he has reacted with a heart on photos of her with her dog on Facebook, a few days after the attacker and she (married since 2023) allegedly separated.

Seems like a case of infidelity.

I do not think it's a good idea to douse someone in gasoline, chase them down and set them on fire, personally

[-] robot_dog_with_gun@hexbear.net 8 points 6 months ago

yeah there's safer ways to do things

[-] spudnik@hexbear.net 3 points 6 months ago

Use a backpack sprayer with kerosene, gets the distance you require and kerosene is only flammable instead of explosive like gasoline. Bonus points if you want to use some kind of surfactant to increase the stickiness, though that will probably wreck the entire set up after a few uses

[-] robot_dog_with_gun@hexbear.net 2 points 6 months ago

yeah gotta keep up with the maintenance on your supervillain kit

[-] spudnik@hexbear.net 1 points 6 months ago

It's only a supervillain accessory when your target isn't just doing a controlled burn during forest management or wildfire control. This set up plus a drip torch isn't super uncommon, other than the surfactant. Plus I'm pretty sure anyone could outrun someone wearing it, but I also would have said that about chasing someone with a can of gas shrug-outta-hecks

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.
