A man died last week after being pulled into an MRI machine by a “large metallic chain” police said he was wearing around his neck – highlighting the importance of checking for any metallic objects before going near the powerful magnets used in the medical imaging machines.

The 61-year-old died Thursday, a day after Nassau County police said he was pulled into the MRI machine at Nassau Open MRI in Westbury, New York, on Long Island. The victim was wearing “a large metallic chain around his neck causing him to be drawn into the machine,” prompting an unspecified “medical episode,” police said in a news release.

The man’s entry to the room “while the scan was in progress” was not authorized, police said.

He was taken to a hospital in critical condition before he was declared dead the following day. The investigation is ongoing, police said.

My initial reaction was that this wouldnt really happen unless it was a big chain. You shouldnt wear them in but a neclace or belt buckle is too small for that much force to be exerted. It would pull on it, but you can still pull it back if its small enough. Then I read the article, "a 20 pound chain" - holy shit! That could definitely yank you around. What a tragedy.

Also, "turn that damn thing off!" They literally cant. There is an emergency stop but it takes several hours for the energy to dissipate and it wont release in the time needed. MRIs are known to lift 500 pound hospital beds and crush people between them. The force is incredible. Normally for this reason there is safety protocols and the doors to the room are locked by passcode or badge access to prevent entries like this.

So, having a penis piercing wouldn't actually hurt you?

I remember this. I was once told that the gas alone probably cost $20,000 or more. If the magnet was damaged from warming up its far far more.

I don’t want to be cruel but this seems like a Darwin Award contender. Wtf was he thinking?
