I had a TC file sent to me, I installed TC to open it.

I used to use TC a lot; many years ago.

But I remembered that there was some controversy a few years back.

Is there a replacement?

The ability to mount an encrypted filesystem and then send that file to someone is really useful.

It's my understanding that https://veracrypt.io/en/Downloads.html took over. That said, I'm curious to see what other people recommend.

Veracrypt is what I moved to and works the same for my use

VeraCrypt is recommended by the French government. Cryptomator is fine too but it's more useful for clouds, not for sharing files.

yeah the sudden shutdown with that cryptic "not secure" warning was wild - most security researchers think it was either a warrant canary or the devs just got tired of maintaining it, but noone knows for sure lol.
