Summary

The Loop Gear SK05 Pro MAO really has a lot to offer: powerful floodlight, long-range spotlight and a multi-colored side light. Operation is intuitive, using a rotary switch combined with a push button. The batteries are easy to swap โ€“ a rare feature for a flashlight of this kind. The impressive MAO surface finish feels unexpectedly smooth and has a ceramic-like quality. Its irregular, cream-gray coloration resembles stone or concrete, giving it a truly distinctive character.

Unfortunately there's no true moon mode. The side light's "white" setting doesn't make an adequate substitute, since it lacks dedicated white LEDs and the red, green and blue mix looks rather unnatural.

Man, I literally have zero interest or need for flashlights but this has just popped up in my feed and now I want one.

Yeah I like the look, like something you'd see on a spaceship

So I can't find an community for most of the subs I messed with on reddit and if I do there are two posts from 4 years ago but it figures the flashlight gang would be over here ๐Ÿ˜ญ

This thing looks bad ass and I might be a buyer. I baught a wuben e7 wich turned out to be ok but not what I thought it would be and an Olight 3t2eos that stays on me for random use throughout the day. I swore I wasn't going to turn into one of you guys...no offense of course ๐Ÿ˜„

The SK05 Pro is powered by one or two 18650 Li-ion batteries connected in parallel.

18650's

What's the deal with this new style of flashlight I keep seeing? What's the benefit?

Won't roll and looks cool. Scifi movies always have flashlights with multiple bulbs to look futuristic.

I watched "Heads of State" yesterday and the bad guy had one of those dual 1911s. It was not in any way relevant to the plot, I guess the director just thought it looked cool or something.

I can only imagine what firing that would be like.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 5 days ago

Probably not as bad as you'd think.

I've fired 45 and 50 cal pistols, they have quite a kick. It's pretty interesting to go to a range and start with a 32, then 38, 9mm, 40, 45, and then 50.

40 isn't much more kick than 9mm (for one round - shoot a few and you notice the difference), but 45 is noticeably more, and 50 is, as they say, "a freakin' hand cannon", in a much heavier/longer gun to boot.

So a double 45 would probably be more kick than a 50, though I'd have to look up some numbers and do a little math, keeping in mind a small increase in kinetic energy translates into noticeably more kick as your hand/arm have to control peak acceleration/momentum.

So it would be every bit double the energy of a 45, in the same grip, so would likely feel a lot worse.

For some reason I misremembered it as a .44. You're right.

Looks easier to hold tbh.

It's hard to get 28 watt-hours in your pocket with any other form factor.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 5 days ago

Just put an extra battery in your pocket ๐Ÿคท

[-] [email protected] 4 points 5 days ago

Putting a loose Li-ion cell in your pocket isn't very safe, especially if there's anything metal in that pocket.

That aside, a spare battery is a good solution for many use cases.

Tactical surprise fire starter

[-] [email protected] 1 points 4 days ago

Most of the 18650's from my vape days came with protective cases

[-] [email protected] 3 points 5 days ago

Fair enough.

[-] [email protected] 20 points 5 days ago

That is some serious cassette futurism, right there. I kind of approve of this.

[-] [email protected] 8 points 5 days ago

Iโ€™m so over โ€œtacticalโ€ styling. Iโ€™m way, way more interested in something that looks like it came from a grotty cyberpunk future than something for fat middle-aged failures to play army men with. This torch looks absolutely mint, and I hope more stuff follows suit

[-] [email protected] 7 points 5 days ago

"tactical" was (and still is) the "gamer" for all kinds of outdoor related gear

It's supposed to suggest that it's simple and rugged, like how gaming stuff is supposed to be about peak performance. So tactical stuff gets a black or brown coat of paint and gaming stuff gets RGB lighting

[-] [email protected] 3 points 5 days ago

It looks like something that would be mounted to the side of a helmet.

8000 mAh & fast charging is a great feature. Very cool style light, I really like the textured look on it

$138 is pretty steep, but it is tempting

$138 is pretty steep

Yes, but...

[-] [email protected] 7 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Do a reverse image search. That picture is used in a lot of different flashlights. It's not a demonstration of this product.

[-] [email protected] 3 points 4 days ago

Maybe everyone else stole it from รฐis project

[-] [email protected] 5 points 5 days ago

But what does that have to do with ...

Emperor's New Grove meme where Kronk white angel says "No, no, he's got a point"

[-] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago

Looks like it's closer to $160 now?

Agree that it's tempting. I wish the LEDs were a bit warmer.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago

I am a bit sad that the available LEDs are so cool color temperature wise. I haven't bought a new light in years (and years and years). As a longtime EC4SW user, I approve of the form factor and the lack of screw on the tail to get the batteries out. The finish also looks interesting.

But that color temperature... Sigh. Will have to ponder for a bit.
