Calm down. This was the same tactic sheinbaum uses every day. Manufactured chaos over a nothing tax that wasn’t even enforced for years.it was a throw away deal to distract Donald cuz he’s so dumb and easily distracted. ‘I won!’ Meanwhile the export market and Canada stocks took a sweet uptick. Donald is none the wiser as to why. He’s just running off to admire himself in the mirror again.

If you are upset by this fact, you can support your local Canadian artists by viewing their work here, instead of on Netflix, Google, Meta:

Thank you, I’ve been meaning to download this app and now i I have

Or he created a thing he could trade in exchange for concessions...

Or, if you actually understand how the global economy works (and is currently being held hostage by an infant), and you still just want to support Canadiam artists, you can support them this way. Carney did better than PP would have done.

This isn't a cave. This is giving a narcissist a surface-level "win" that doesn't actually cost Canada anything. We'll all learn next month that it was never about the DST.

a surface-level “win” that doesn’t actually cost Canada anything.

Except for billions of dollars of tax revenue.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago

Which would be, in practice, very difficult to enforce. These companies excel in lowering overhead and avoiding taxes. The very fact that brands ike facebook and google are available in nearly every country should tell you the level of coercive power and wealth they actually have.

I'm not happy about it either, but it is entirely possible that this was a tactic or diversion.

[-] [email protected] 6 points 1 day ago

oh yes, the bending over and take it power move... awesome for any time trump throws a tantrum

[-] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

You seem to accuse a lot of people of bending over in your comment history and seem pretty keen on violence.

You’re not here for discussion. You’re here to bait. Get bent.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

I keep calling for a general strike, how is that violence?

Also. no I'm not here for discussion because Amerigans let that stage lapse, the entire world is in terrible peril thanks to your collective selfishness and toxic individualism

if you think thoughts and prayers can get you out of this hole, keep at it and continue to deny your imminent fall into fascism

[-] [email protected] -1 points 1 day ago

It was never enforced since 2022. It was a diversion tactic.

[-] [email protected] 5 points 1 day ago

no, a delay in implementation is absolutely not the same as a never enforced tax

[-] [email protected] 9 points 2 days ago

I was mad at first but on reflection I think you may be right, and hope this is subtle jiu-jitsu, so to speak. We'll see.

[-] [email protected] 8 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

You might be giving it too much credit. It might not quite be ju-jitsu, but I'll say that it might be making the best of what's around. People need to understand how completely unhinged the US has become and realize that the rest of the planet is dealing with a country that doesn't see past the grift it's committing on it's own people to make a quick buck. I never thought i would support a WEF banker, but right now Carney is the best weapon Canada has against the level of short sighted corruption the US wholeheartedly voted for.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

and how is giving in to every trump whim a good strategy to deal with him?

what's next? becoming the 51st state to placate him?

[-] [email protected] 7 points 2 days ago

Carney sure seems like he's in a hurry to use any excuse to cut a tax. Letting Trump dictate Canada's internal policy is one hell of a win to give away.

[-] [email protected] -5 points 2 days ago

Y'all are remembering that it's us Canadians that will be paying this tax, right? It's not going to affect any company's bottom line in the slightest.

[-] [email protected] 0 points 1 day ago

I don't agree, but even if I grant it do you feel great about a hostile foreign leader dictating your country's laws? The DST was finished legislation, legally passed by Canadian's elected representatives. And now it's gone. Because Trump says so.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

Of all the things Carney could concede, this one is the least of my worries.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Canada's sovereignty means that little to you? Your elected representative just got overruled by a foreign leader.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

Nah. Carney made a strategic decision to appease a toddler.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Between selling out Canada's sovereignty and the NATO target he's doing a lot of appeasing. I don't think he deserves all the grace you're giving him.

[-] [email protected] 6 points 2 days ago

What? The digital service tax was for the American corporations to pay.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

And they're absolutely never going to raise prices for Canadians to compensate right?

[-] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago

What is the price to use Facebook?

[-] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

What they charge Canadian advertisers. That cost is then budgeted in the products and services.

Nothing is free.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

What is the price to use Facebook?

Hundreds of ads being shoved in your face.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

That wasn't the argument OP was making.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

That foreign corporations would pay out of their Canadian sales.

Which would certainly cause them to increase the fees they charge their Canadian customers so they don't have to reduce their profits.

[-] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago

I'm well aware that's what they might do to offset their costs, but OP saying that the corporations us Canadians will have to pay the tax is plain wrong. They're probably conflating it with tariffs.

And sorry ‒ off topic question. I haven't lived in Canada in years, but do we really say "y'all" now? That's kinda weird.

[-] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago

but do we really say "y'all" now? That's kinda weird.

Yes it's weird, it is another example of creeping American influence.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

We already know Trump's bluster isn't about the DST or illegal border crossing or fentynal or any of the other things he's been whining about.

It's about him throwing his (considerable) weight around and making himself feel more important.

And about finding new ways to scam his followers by showing off how super important he is.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

We expected this. If he actually took on Big Tech, it would scare the hell out of Canadian big tech companies too, and kiss that corporate funding goodbye.

Still, it is disappointing.
