I said this once, the interviewer said " thank you but we're looking for people who are passionate about the work here"

It was a fucking burger king

You didn’t let me finish, I want this job so I can make money for burger king! I just really love ground up dead animals and… monarchy

To BKs credit, they have plant-based everything. In contrast to other fast food restaurants, which have a plant based something at best

It's a given that you're interviewing because you need money. They want to know why else you want the job.

Ill be honest, I answer that way because I need to know if they're going to communicate with me like a normal person, if you can't respond positively to that answer or at least laugh it off and redirect, then I 100% can't trust you to pull off the manager face every now and then and talk to me civilly about things /be understanding and not uphold policies that make no sense.

That's the thing, though - there isn't anything else. Just think - would you still go to work if they stopped paying you? If, like most people, you answered no, then everything besides the pay is just a neat bonus on top of the only real thing you're there for.

Hiring managers are well aware people's primary motivation for work is pay and that the question is bullshit, but are directed by their superiors to find applicants who are more enthusiastic to work for them, as they're likely to work harder and for less. Look at the video games industry as a prime example. Many many studios and publishers hire developers and pay them beans because people are lined up around the block to work their "dream job" in the games industry. Those same developers could likely get a job in some other industry making software for something boring, but for far greater pay, benefits, work/life balance, etc.

I am in agreement that not being able to be more upfront with employment motivations is troublesome, but our choices are either play the game, find an employer who cares less about the corpo garbage, or self-employ.

This question doesn't find enthusiastic workers. It finds workers willing to lie to your face to get some money.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 4 days ago

Not true, if you have some breathing room and are persistent you can find an employer who treats you well. I've done this at least a dozen times now

[-] [email protected] 3 points 4 days ago

i would consider that to be part of find an employer who cares less about the corpo garbage, but yes, employers who actually care about their employees do exist.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 4 days ago

Of course I understand there's those periods in your life where you NEED. MONEY. NOW. not a lot folk can do there unfortunately

The vast majority of the time they don't give a shit when they ask this question, they're just testing your willingness to kowtow. But this is especially true when its a fucking burger king.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 4 days ago

For sure. They're trying to find people who will work harder for less.

Only applies to some "skilled work" jobs tho, where you better have some passion or do a poor job.

good know early if company is bad to work with

[-] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago

I think this is actually a fair question in the service industry. You're just need to read between the lines

"Can you lie to my face in corpo speak? Can you do it unprompted, when we both know you're lying?"

[-] [email protected] 8 points 4 days ago

I said this in my first interview, and while I still go the job, they made it clear that it was very much in spite of the response. Sorry that it wasn't my life goal at 16 to put tags on clothing...

[-] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago

It has always been my dream to be a successful employee at a corporation and help its CEO buy a yacht

[-] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

"Do you want flowery talk about the greatness of the company or grounded talk?"

[-] [email protected] -1 points 3 days ago

Heres the deal though, EVERYONE is after the job because they want money. Every single job, every single person. No ones working for free. They need something to differentiate the candidates from someone whose just gonna be a warm body vs someone who will actually get something done.

[-] [email protected] 6 points 3 days ago

You know what I would just starve to death instead of working passionately for a corporate lord.
