will you be getting one? I can't remember the last time I was less excited for a console launch, personally, outside of xbox console releases
I pre-ordered one, yes, in theory it'll be delivered today. I think Nintendo got a bit arrogant with the success of Switch 1, so they've taken some anti-consumer practices a bit far. I'm not a fan of Game Key Cards, I won't be buying any, and the rest of the negative stuff that's been discussed to boredom.
But I've enjoyed my Switch a lot in these past years. The Switch 2 is a more powerful version of the same. I'm looking forward to playing new Mario Kart, Zelda games with improvements, Metroid Prime 4, and lots of other stuff. I don't think I'll abandon my Switch just yet, and I'll keep buying physical games on there when it makes sense over Switch 2. But I am excited.
Personally it's also the first time I'm getting a new Nintendo system on launch date, which is exciting as a fan since the NES era.
I get your excitement. Personally, I'd be down to get a Switch that's not lagging behind in terms of hardware, but I just can't justify the price tag for barely anything new it brings to the table. Sure, the performance is apparently a lot better, but apart from that not enough has changed to warrant the purchase for me. I haven't been excited for Zelda for a couple years now, the other Nintendo IPs don't really interest me, I don't play on the go as much as I used to, and I have a PS5 where most titles will probably still run better than on Switch 2 despite the hardware upgrade. Plus like you've said, I don't want to buy into Nintendo's recent anti-consumer practises.
Only game I'm playing on Switch is Overwatch and even that's not been played in the past couple months - console's just collecting dust at this point. I used to be a very big advocate of the console, and I still am, but it doesn't really have a place for me right now.
Do you have any other consoles or is Switch your only one? I think in that case I could see myself getting a Switch 2
Yeah, I think if you have a PS5, it only makes sense if you want to play first party Nintendo games. I've considered getting a PS5 several times, third party games will always run better there. I bought Mortal Kombat 11 for Switch and it runs like crap, just that experience made me think more of getting a PS5! I have a decent laptop I inherited, which runs games pretty well (not a high level last gen thing, but decent enough). I play some games there, but (maybe because I work with computers) I prefer gaming on the couch/elsewhere.
No ethical consumption under capitalism and all that. But escapism with videogames is fun and helps one cope with the state of the world for a little while.
oh absolutely, I'm the last one to judge someone for a gaming console. Sony is definitely not a clean company either. I'm also more of a couch gamer nowadays - desks are just so uncomfy
The key card thing is stupid. Nintendo is (was), I think, the last developer who released full games on their media format. I will go so far as to import games to get a physical edition. If I'm going to buy a physical "thing", that "thing" better be there in its entirety. I'll be using the third party options that take and make physical releases even more than I was before.
I'm the same, the Switch is the generation where I got the most imported games ever. Just because there was no physical version in my region (looking at you Capcom 👀). I also reluctanctly buy from Limited Run Games and other "limited" options which cash on fear of missin out. But I'd always rather have a physical game I can play in 10 years like I do with my consoles from 30 years ago.
The key cards is definitely stupid and I hope it fails miserably and goes away. But I doubt that'll be the case. The good thing is Nintendo -at least for now- will keep their first party releases physical.
I'm probably getting a Switch 2 at some point, but the difference between "soon" and "maybe in an year or two" depends on them getting backwards compatibility to 100% for the games in my Switch 1 library, plus hardware reviews so I don't have to worry about another mess like the drifting problem in the Switch 1.
My Switch 1 is showing signs of age so getting an upgrade with better performance is tempting, but it needs at least the two points above covered before I consider it. It is too pricy to take a chance, in particular when you add the cost for console, SD Express and potentially new acessories (reports say that 8bitdo controllers currently do not work on the Switch 2).
No, at least not right away. Maybe in a few years, but I’m just not that excited about it.
I want physical, offline carts, not game keys. I specifically buy local media so I don’t care about internet availability or connectivity. Not interested in wading through the minutiae of what games are which, so in the end I’m just not buying anything. And I say this as someone who has bought nearly 50 Switch 1 games.
I think I'll wait at least a year or so until there are more first party games. New 3D Mario and Zelda pleaseeee
Yeah, I don't really use my current Switch enough to justify getting it right now but when that next 3D Mario drops I will be getting it for certain
Got mine last night, and it’s great!
The system feels more premium, Mario Kart is really fun (and that map is huge!). Zelda at 60fps HDR is something else. It’s so smooth. I’m envious of people that get to play it this way for their first time. I’m going to go back and try to get more koroks.
I’m glad Nintendo has a system I don’t feel bad buying certain games on again!
I got mine yesterday and it's really cool. I've only played Mario Kart World so far and it's amazing. I stayed up late until my eyes burned, but I managed to play through all the cups on Grand Prix.
I haven't played Zelda yet because I know once I do, I'll get sucked in again and play nothing else for weeks 😅
The added app thing for Zelda turned out to be pretty cool. I was surprised. I’ve been using it to find the few last wells I missed and look up where those new Zelda audio memories are.
And then, of course, the koroks…
I got my $450 Deltarune machine.
