Maybe lj could go down the swift backup route where purchases are tied to a Google sign in to avoid play services? You could buy the app from Google play via web, download it via aurora, then validate via in app login.

Down side is lj would need a verification server (although he has servers for Reddit sync Imgur which he could repurpose for billing).
Disclaimer I am not a dev just a rando lemmy, Lemite? (Idk what to call a lemmy user)
I think the consens has been reached that Lemmy users are Lemmings. (Those cute furry rodents)
Watch out for them though, they're pretty creative on escaping.

We live in a lemming world.
Sync for Reddit has always worked without Play Services if you patched out the ads with Revanced Manager ;) Why the developer included a crash instead of an error message is still a mystery to me. We can't be the first to point it out, can we? Let's hope there will be a Revanced Patch for Sync for Lemmy.
I know this is an old post, but i wanted to chime in and say i would love to see Sync available for de-googled phones. I will pay like everyone else.

although there is no option to pay and remove ads without play services, you can just directly pay him on patreon and use an adblocker
