As some of you already have seen the lemm.ee admins have announced that the instance is shutting down at the end of the month.

The question for us is where should we migrate next.

Returning to [email protected] is always an option, alternatively we could move to either another established and stable lemmy instance or migrate to a piefed instance.

Piefed instances federate with lemmy instances as normal, and it allows for adding flairs to community posts and users, something not yet implemented on Lemmy. I haven't tried Piefed myself yet so I would need to dig more into it if it is a popular option.

Ultimately the choice for our next destination is up to you guys!

Flairs are on their way to Lemmy. So that shouldn't be a factor.

I'm vehemently against moving back to Lemmy World.

I propose taking over [email protected] it's a football instance. It's always up and up-to-date and it allows for smaller teams to host their communities there too, which should help grow the football community on Lemmy overall.

Lemmy 1.0 is planned for Autumn 2025, and it's not a set in stone date.

Same. We see how much impact the Lemm.ee shutdown has, imagine what it would be if LW did the same tomorrow.

For context, this instance is part of the https://communick.news/c/communick_news_network network

The admin is known for being against donations-based instances:

I also personally had quite a few unpleasant interactions with him (the most recent being today: https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/45833491/19184026), but that's me.

I'm not going to pretend that rgullis versus you isn't a mess. But I don't think it should get in the way of finding c/football a good home.

[-] [email protected] 7 points 3 weeks ago

You'd be quite welcome on [email protected]. The instance has been running almost two years already, it is an instance exclusively for football communities and I can potentially customize it if you come up with any reasonable idea, a matchthreader bot? Integration with a Matrix room? All possible.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago

I believe this is the best option. Even though you and @[email protected] have a small disagreement that could easily be ironed out, it shouldn't prevent all of us from migrating there. I'm one of the Beehaw admins and if our group becomes large enough in the future, then I can create a football community at Beehaw.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 3 weeks ago

I really like Beehaw, it's a very valuable instance that a has a unique place on Lemmy. That being said, do you think that being defederated from LW and SJW could impact the activity of the community?

The one we're currently in isn't that active in the first place, and Lemm.ee federated with almost everyone.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago

I don't believe so, no.

[-] [email protected] 7 points 3 weeks ago

I would say Piefed.social.

I just migrated a community from lemm.ee to there today, it went quite well: https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/45833491/19184026

Flairs are cool, and they exist for posts and users

[-] [email protected] 5 points 3 weeks ago

I just wanted to say that I agree we should migrate to [email protected] I believe it's the best option for now. @[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected]

[-] [email protected] 3 points 3 weeks ago

You can criticize me but going to an instance called soccer instead of football is nuts for me

[-] [email protected] 2 points 3 weeks ago

I discussed with the admin before, he was ready to get another domain name, but it seems like football domain name are hard to get

[-] [email protected] 2 points 3 weeks ago

HAHA! Yes, I agree. Head on over to [email protected]. This looks like our best place to migrate.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago

Why that instance in particular? Quite a few communities are moving to sopuli.xyz for instance, which has been around for 4 years and hosts several popular communities like [email protected] and [email protected]

[-] [email protected] 2 points 3 weeks ago

It's available and someone from our football group is a moderator there. Convenience and an easy move.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Creating a community doesn't take more than a few clicks. I created [email protected] today and already got some posts with more than 20 upvotes and 62 subscribers.

We're lucky enough to have some time to redirect people to new communities from the existing ones compared to an overnight shutdown.

By the way, which team do you support?

By the way, which team do you support?

Manchester City and New England Revolution

[-] [email protected] 2 points 3 weeks ago

Manchester City

Tough season for you all, good luck for the next one!

[-] [email protected] 2 points 3 weeks ago

Calling third place finish a "tough season" is really flattering. The standard is way too high.

We go again next season

[-] [email protected] 2 points 3 weeks ago

I remember a rough patch around November? Also with KDB leaving that will probably be a change for the team?

[-] [email protected] 2 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Yes, the rough patch on November. We didn't win any matches in that period, which is still crazy to think about.

We are going to spend big this summer. Reinders, Gibbs-White, Cherki are a few players we are chasing. Grealish, Bernardo, Stones are rumored to be on the way out. At least, that looks like the plan, we can still end up not getting any target and the squad stays the same.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago

Too many injuries. Can't believe they still got 3rd place though.

Who do you support?

[-] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Yes, that Guardiola stat post from a bit ago is crazy (https://beehaw.org/post/20247356 ). He's really a unique coach.

Barcelona. That last semi final against Inter aged me quite a bit.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 3 weeks ago

That last semi final against Inter aged me quite a bit.

Same here.

I second this.

[-] [email protected] 3 points 3 weeks ago

I just moved my account and (tiny) communities I moderate to piefed.social . The migration is pretty seamless, all post got copied over to new community.

My experience (under 24h)has been OK so far. There is many quirks that came with it tho, I am still digging all the feature available.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 3 weeks ago

Nice Manchester City flair!

[-] [email protected] 2 points 3 weeks ago

Can we have a new post with options so we can vote?

[-] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago

Yes, I'll give people some more time to discuss before making another post.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 3 weeks ago

Just FYI, @[email protected] and I are mods on [email protected]

I might post there for a bit just to see if there's any quirks or issues.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago

Hey. If the vote turns out that people want to migrate to [email protected], then we can make you a moderator there. Unless, of course, you'd prefer not to.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 2 weeks ago

I never really wanted to be the main moderator in the first place, I'd be happy to let someone else take the responsibility.

I'll still put up a poll to see what the community at large wants though.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 2 weeks ago

I think you do a good job, especially with troubleshooting the bot. You don't have to be the main mod, but if you could keep maintaining the bot on the new community, that would be nice.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 2 weeks ago

The bot isn't tied to the admin role, I started on it before I became a moderator for [email protected]

[-] [email protected] 2 points 2 weeks ago

Oh definitely, but I guess it's still good that you're able to remove or lock posts if things go off hand

[-] [email protected] 1 points 2 weeks ago

OK. Sounds good.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Adding this as a first level comment: sopuli.xyz has been around for 4 years and hosts several popular communities like [email protected] and [email protected]

It is also hosted in Europe by Finnish admins.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago

The football community already exists there but it is empty and the person who created it hasn't posted in one year. I'm not sure how anyone could go about gaining control of it.

On the other hand, I have a very positive relationship with the admins of that instance. It's an option to consider I guess.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago

I've also always had very nice interactions with the main admin, I guess asking him mod rights over that empty community shouldn't be an issue.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago

I guess asking him mod rights over that empty community shouldn’t be an issue.

That would be the only way I could imagine it working out. Hopefully, he's technically proficient enough to do it. I'll send them a direct message here in a bit.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago

Hello @[email protected] , I just messaged QuentinCallaghan as well, he said that he would grant you the mod right once you make a post to that community.

One thing to keep in mind: moderation isn't completely functional from a non-local account, so you might consider making a sopuli account first.

I have to agree, any instance could die at any time. I made the mistake to sign-up in lemmy.world, which was wrong, because lemmy should be many instances and not 4-5 instances. Same goes with commuties

I known I have a community in lemmy.world, but I'm about to move it looking for instance if not lemmy.ca.

Again, we left Reddit because didn't want to be controlled by 1 person but my many, instances and communities.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago

And yes not lemmy.world, pfied would work I guess.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago

What about fanaticus.social instance? I will post if I find any other instance.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago

Lemmy 0.19.3, are the admins even still around?

[-] [email protected] 2 points 3 weeks ago

Out of 2 admins 1 is active. Lemmy version will be a problem, I didn't notice that.
