Western PhD student Aswin Sureshkumar lost more than four years of pancreatic cancer research when his laptop and two hard drivers[sic] were stolen out of a car on April 21. He's now pleading with Londoners to not only get the laptop back, but take theft more seriously.

maybe he should take backups more seriously. The damn disk could have failed and had just as unpleasant an outcome.

There are so many ways to backup data, and a researcher should be using some version control anyway. This is painful, but it's a good teachable lesson for the student.

So PhD candidate doesn't understand keeping a copy, or sending to the cloud. That is worrying, more than the theft.

During undergrad I worked in IT for the university. Outside of their singular focus the professors with PhDs were some of the dumbest mofos I've ever met. I'll never understand the gay republican with a bust of Hillary Clinton and Robert E. Lee in his office.

Hillary Clinton and Robert E. Lee

They're the same picture. And the well-monied only care about the wedge issues so they can keep stealing wealth, otherwise they wouldn't embrace Tim Cook and Peter Thiel, that's for the masses.
