It's being run by incompetent fascists, which is the most terrifying reality to be living in.

Competent fascists would scare me more.

I think it's somewhat of an oxymoron. Authoritarianism is an extremely short-sighted ideology. You either die in disgrace or you live a long life that's just not worth living. With enough resources they could live a hedonistic life of luxury anywhere in the world, but they can't help themselves. I don't believe any fascist has ever been happy, because they have no choice but to obsess over the daily power struggle.

They might gleefully crush people under their boots, but they can't retire. They can't just go home and relax. Whoever takes over either puts them in prison for their crimes or puts them down for being a threat to the new regime. They have to worry about poison in the food, snipers in the hills, and betrayals by their closest aides and their family and friends.

It's the Sword of Damocles but worse

The bar to pull the levers of government is so low these days that stupid people can effectively be just as destructive as an intelligent person, especially when aided by a coterie of sycophants.

[-] [email protected] 3 points 5 days ago

There is no such thing.

[-] [email protected] 9 points 5 days ago

More terrifying even then if they were competent?

[-] [email protected] 2 points 5 days ago

the competent people are behind the curtains and they are doing a terrific job, this shitshow is all by design

[-] [email protected] 2 points 5 days ago

Yes. They'll do incredibly foolish things that no competent person would do, simply because it maximizes power tripping cruelty.

See, this is why I advocate for Oxford commas. The way this is written, it makes it sound like the drug addicts are reality TV stars and Fox news hosts... actually, on second thought, carry on.

Love me some Oxford commas.

The leader is a convicted felon with their only actual government experience being from when he was impeached twice and shouldn't have been elected the first time

And pedophiles. (Trump has been seen with Epstein).

and honestly, considering the average American, this feels right. It's certainly more representative of us than any smooth-talking orator. We became a nation of charlatans and fools; it is only natural that our leadership reflects that.

Wait til Fox News debuts "Who wants to be a cabinet secretary island" this fall.

Wasn’t there talk about a show where foreigners would compete for citizenship? Or am I misremembering and mixing up what was actually just satire? Hard to keep it straight these days.

Sigh, fucking gross and unsurprising. I hate what these assholes have done with my country.

[-] [email protected] 9 points 5 days ago

Sounds like V for Vendetta

It's honestly sad seeing posts like these.

Did people forget that it's always projection with republicans? And how they stop complaining about something when they do the sort of thing they usually complain about? And notice how they're no longer compaining about a "swamp" or some vague "them" controlling the people in charge? Because that's what is going on right now.

And they are clearly succeeding in one of the their main goals: Put the blame on the idiots with the public facing positions.

There’s definitely some overlap with those categories.

Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.
