And in fairness, the fifth attempt was on an intel platform.

i donno. we were fine with stuff like bazzite for more than a year now. community based, most cases supports led lights on handhelds, has an installer for emulators and plugins by default...

Yeah, I have MiniPC running Nobara. I'm interested to see of SteamOS would work even if i have no intention of switching.

But gaming mini PCs with steamOS preinstalled might be a future product range that comes along so its interesting to see how close steamOS is to that.

The gaming focused distros are great and won't be harmed by that, but steamOS might grow the linux desktop further by being a viable windows alternative for people who want a bit more power than a steamdeck and want an off the shelf low or mid range gaming PC. Steam Machines may now actually be viable thanks to how far Proton has come. The original machines were probably 10 years too early.

I don't see where i should install steamos on a pc when i can install Garuda Linux gaming Edition which comes with steam installed and working.

Garuda is the best! I love it!

But why SteamOS?

is it the only linux distro? What happened to Garuda, endeavour, mint, arch, opensuse, fedora, and all that?

This whole SteamOS thing feels like its just a bunch of windows marketers trying to convince everyone that Linux dosent work

I think it's just because Steam is already a recognized and trusted brand. There's many distros available but your average gamer will probably lean towards SteamOS even if it is not the best one.

It's because the public at large has no idea how Linux or distros work.

Id personally have people using SteamOS than Windows, another thing is convincing people to use Linux is very difficult already.
