Sorry if this has been discussed before. I have been thinking about how fucked my family will be once he really starts rounding us up..and it hit me that the tariffs are likely not the incentive, but rather removing any options for people like me to escape.

I cant say i blame canada for hating us, but some of us really do not deserve what is going to happen to us. I live in fear in a way that i thought i had escaped when i escaped my extremist birth family and religion. I feel angry, scared, and helpless to protect myself and my partner.

Sorry it got dark. But i'm curious to know what others think of this.

Donald's already said the quiet part out loud in public. A few weeks ago, he mentioned foreign countries are kissing his ass over tariffs.

That's what it's about. It's not that deep.

Who's to say Trump has one motivation and P25 has a different one? He's mostly a puppet after all.

[-] [email protected] 7 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Because P25 can't control Donald. No one can.

That doesn't make any sense. Anyone who has a problem with Trump is welcome to come to Canada. You will be safe here among friends.

I have just seen so much anti-american stuff here on lemmy, people saying we deserve this and canada shouldnt waste resources on helping us. I guess i thought that mindset was more prevalent than it is.

It's hard to make sense of things when you're drowning in cortisol. However, thanks for the kind words.

Most Canadians hate Trump, and have no love for what your government is up to lately. But we have no problem with the average American. (Unless you're a Trump supporter. Then we'll probably throw eggs at you.)

Haha! Eggs. That's a flex!

Honestly, if that’s the plan, it’s a dumb one.

I doubt Canada would ever stop taking American asylum seekers due to Canadian public resentment of the American government.

Like, even if you want to assume purely cynical motivations, taking in those who are the targets of regime in opposition to you is grade a propaganda fodder.

And from a more honest perspective, the average Canadian is probably very understanding that anyone running from the regime is probably not someone who put it in power, and is thus very much on their side in the whole situation.

Canada is, in general, extremely welcoming of immigrants, even those from extremely disparate cultures. A huge influx of people of a very similar culture is not going to generate any sort of major backlash from even conservative elements.

The only really pressure point is probably going to be housing supply, but that’s an issue to be dealt with, not a reason to deny refugees entry, if it was, they wouldn’t be welcoming immigrants at one of the highest rates in the world.

TLDR: Canada is better than that

Lets hope you're right

Thanks for the bit of encouragement, i appreciate it

As a Canuck, I'm pretty much going to welcome anyone fleeing the Mango Mussolini.

Agreed. We have our own drama over immigrants, but I don't see Canadians turning away asylum seekers any time soon. My wife and I have already offered "extended visitation" offers to our LGBTQ+ friends in the states.

As I mentioned to all of my lgbt US friends... The Canadian border is largely undefended and if you decide to cross in the forest, somebody will probably pick you up and feed you.

We don't hate Americans. We hate fascists.

If you are fleeing fascism, you are unlikely to be a fascist, therefore you will be welcomed.

We have seen with the Russian invasion in Ukraine that people are way more willing to accept white/christian people as refugees. Also the US has a southern border as well, if you really have to escape by land.

If you really have to worry about something, I would worry more about conservatives coming to power in Canada. They would probably cooperate with Republicans or at the very least make it legally harder to flee even if it might go against the will of the majority of Canadian people.

Likely more Russian destabilization and maybe an early investment in WW3. If we claw back control from the GOP we'll be hobbled and vulnerable. Russia wants us to burn all our institutions and friendships. Things will be shitty for probably another 50 years so all the idiots that voted for Trump "because of the economy" will blame the lack of miraculous recovery on the Democrats and go back to their abusive ex.
