I would say that it is.
If your dad draws anthro artwork frequently, and has been for a while, then he probably already knows what furries are. He might not be one, but I'd bet he has at least an understanding if he's involved in any online art communities at all.
The furry fandom has definitely gone through a renaissance within the last decade, but it's been around since the 90s and earlier.
