They are talking about striking in the national media, a conversation started by an Alexander-Hamilton-moderate-conservative. This is it, it has hit the mainstream media and word is getting out to the people that aren't necessarily in the 50501, and like organizations, loop.

I've been seeing this guy for longer than I care to remember. He never called out Bush Jr. for lying us into an endless war for oil, or stood up to racist attacks against Obama.

Proof that they only scream when they are getting stabbed themselves.

On the other hand, the enemy of my enemy is my friend, and any one who is against Trump now is welcome.

Maxim 29: The enemy of my enemy is my enemy's enemy. No more. No less.

That doesn't mean you can't work with them on a common cause, and maybe even show them the benefits of your way if thinking, but don't get caught out when they turn on you.

If folks can somehow retain one and only one thing if we get through all this without civil war:

R wants power, and they want to hurt anyone who doesn't fit a fairly narrow demographic. That's all they have ever wanted, and every policy or position out of R in the past many years is all the proof you need.

When R gets power they start breaking shit and hurting people. It's the only outcome of modern conservatism. And when they say "enough is enough" it's ONLY because the policies they supported and cheered for finally start to blow back on them.

IF we make it through this folks, DO NOT FORGET. Don't vote R ever again, not for the lowliest local position, not for the highest position. Not for any position. I'm in my 50s and I'm telling you all that hate and control over those not like them are the only things from Republican mouths in as long as I've been old enough to pay attention. How polite they are about it has waxed and waned, but the direction they push for has always been the same.

(and don't come at me with some shitty whataboutism - D sucks in their own way as a group, but that way is not this way)

    Edited to add -

I'm telling you all that hate and control over those not like them are the only things from Republican mouths in as long as I've been old enough to pay attention. How polite they are about it has waxed and waned, but the direction they push for has always been the same.

This is so true that they tried to convince people it wasn't true with a targeted rebranding in the 90s. I don't think anyone bought it even then. Compassionate Conservatism

he did call out the lies about the Iraq war, he just placed the blame on Rumsfeld and Cheney

but he has called it a mistake many times

I think Brooks is a complicated figure but one to pay attention to, even if you don't like his conservative stance

Much, much, MUCH TOO LATE. Everyone with a functioning bullshit meter knew the whole time it was all evil bullshit ginned up by Gee Dubz to attack Iraq for reasons only he really knows because no one has ever been able to definitively state why.

Brooks was a feckless cheerleader and he absolutely made his shit bed. Fuck that guy. Oh he's upset the republicans have destroyed the country? Fuck that guy. What a piece of shit.

This article feels a little disingenuous and seems written by someone who has only heard their friend complain about David Brooks. In his book "The Second Mountain," Brooks goes into his mea culpa moments. He has on more than a few occasions admitted his errors. I would share citations, but it was a library loan and it's on hold.

Those of us who protest against power, aren't we looking for exactly the kind of change of hearts and minds such that Brooks is showing?

He is an honest person, but has had a lifetime of being honestly wrong about almost everything. Even with the mea culpas, he still apportions the blame for our current situation completely inappropriately. That said, I agree we are not in a position to turn away imperfect allies and I applaud him for trying to do something with whatever miniscule influence he retains.

When people say "you used to be able to have honest debate with the other side," David is the only one who in my lifetime that may have been true for.

Well, no, because honest debate recognizes truth and Brooks has fought The Obvious Truth for decades so he can perch in his comfy conservative cheerleader costume.

His bullshit has been nasty for decades and PBS happily smeared him all over their news broadcasts for just as long.

I won't have any part of either now, because of that. Hooray he's vaguely cognizant that Shit Do Be Fucked but holy god man, what a complete fool.

Where was he the last 45 years? Making this happen.

Will he be at these protests?

I agree that he's been an enabler, but you know what they say : the convert is more zealous than the person who grew up in the church.

Well this might be good. In order to achieve regime change and new elections with the protests, you'll need the military on your side. You can never overthrow the government otherwise. So conservative people like this can help.

What is this goddamned clownworld timeline we live in where David fucking Brooks is calling for a mass revolt, a literal insurrection, against the pinnacle, ultimate form of what he and his ilk have advocated for and done their level best to make a reality for longer than I've been alive?

I mean... at this point, fuck it, this is good news, we are gonna need as many bodies in the streets and feet on the ground, from as many backgrounds and persuasions of all kinds to have any chance at all of stopping this madness...

But Jesus Christ if this isn't the most 'Dog finally catches car and is disappointed' fucking thing.

The difference between a shithead like this, and any and all sane people, is that sane people could see this unnecessary shitstorm approaching from afar, while these stunted minds only seem to be able to see things only after things smack then in the face.
Fuck him, all his ilk and the greedy, myopic, ignorant goddamned boat they rode one.

To he fair to Brooks (which I hate to do, since he is a shithead), he was very aware of the dangers of Trump and endorsed Hillary, Biden, and Kamala in the last three elections. He has even said that he was wrong about Bernie, and now acknowledges that his kind of economic populism is the only thing that could have stopped Trump's fascist populism. That being said, he's spent the last three decades promoting the kind of Regan-style neoliberalism and Bush-style imperialism that got us into this mess, so fuck him.

When we need to unite against a literal fascist, I'll gladly stand with conservatives with whom I have serious policy disagreements. Telling them to fuck off will just strengthen Trump's hold.

Once we've finished the fight against the MAGA cult, we can debate each other about policy without worrying about anyone getting disappeared.

How does this asshole think we could avoid situations like this from recurring, should we succeed now? As long as we have billionaires, we will have the conditions for fascism.

A more onion-y title would be something like "Conservative commentator quotes Marx, calls for mass protests and strikes".

The actual title is more just !ironicorsurprisingnews than !nottheonion material imo

    Edit: You've editorialized the title?

    Posts must be:

    1. Links to news stories from...
    2. ...credible sources, with...
    3. ...their original headlines, that...
    4. ...would make people who see the headline think, “That has got to be a story from The Onion, America’s Finest News Source.”

Unless it was changed post-publication, the original is

Conservative NYT Columnist David Brooks Calls for ‘National Civic Uprising’ to Defeat Trumpism – Complete With ‘Mass Rallies, Strikes’

Imo that's actually more onion-y than the changed title

  • source
  • [–] 8 points 1 year ago

Brooks is probably fairly wealthy. He should put his money where his mouth and start filling some strike funds.

  • source
  • [–] 6 points 1 year ago* (3 children)

People are products of their culture and the material conditions that they live under. So, we have two choices: we can either take a hands-off, or laissez-faire, approach and allow conditions to change organically and just accept any political or social changes that might come about, or we can take a more direct approach and try to change the conditions that people live under, and the culture, in such a way that will make something like the Trump movement much less likely to emerge. But, the second option probably won't just happen, spontaneously or organically, it would probably require a fairly heavy handed, top down approach. I know many people are quite apprehensive about that, so that approach would likely be quite controversial.

So, what's it going to be? Let things just play out organically and see what happens, and accept that the outcome may or may not be desirable, or try to steer the course of US society more directly and deliberately?

Brooks has never given a damn about abuse of power or fascist rule. He’s just arguing to defend the status quo. He has the moral backbone of a fruit fly.
