Explanation: In the late 1930s, the Spanish Civil War broke out between Nationalist (Fascist) Spain, and Republican (Socialist) Spain. The fascist dictators Hitler and Mussolini backed the Nationalists, while the Communist dictator Stalin backed the Republicans (with asterisks), each one arming and 'encouraging' their chosen faction from the sidelines.
