This may cause some people to shit bricks, so I'm gonna warn anyone ahead of time not to fuck with me, I'll just block you.

It isn't super recent, but my kid successfully disarmed me the last time we were sparring.

I've been teaching them stuff since covid, and I was doing a mixed general defense and knife use class for a while with my kid, and some of my teacher's younger family; grandkids, etc.

My kid kept up with it after the class fell apart when in person schooling kicked back in, though a little more casually.

But, I've been doing this shit since the early nineties, so it's not an even playing field. I don't fake shit for them, I don't go easy when we spar.

But, back before I fucked up my back towards the end of last year, we were going hard. Practice weapons, obviously, but you can leave some nasty bruises with training knives of the type I have.

Well, I was going high, to take their throat, and they countered with some quick footwork, dropping their center of gravity, and striking at my hand. And it fucking worked. My hand went numb and the knife went flying. Thought I was going to have to go to the ER, it took an hour for all the feeling to come back, and it was days before I could do much without it hurting.

The kid is still in high school, has only been training for a few years, and disarmed an adult that's been training with knives since the nineties. That's fucking dope.

Impressive to be honest. I guess you use a training knife and not the real deal?

Yup, the ones we use are essentially baby boken; hand carved wooden tanto.

We do live blade training, just not sparring. There's just no realistic way to use a sharp metal blade to spar that isn't going to end with a trip to the hospital. The live blade stuff is about learning how a knife balances and moves, how to control a cut, and how to transition the blade without getting cut.

Makes sense!
