Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

i went through their comment history bc they obsessive, and holy shit. mf has posted 24 comments about blahaj in JUST the past 14 hours.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 4 days ago

And he claims he's not obsessed or angry about being banned from a website that he claims to ignore.

Dude is malding about this more than anyone else.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Weeks? You don't need to be generous

[–] [email protected] 6 points 5 days ago

He's still raging at me, I've given him plenty of times to drop it and he's still mad. I don't think he's even aware of the block button at this point. I'm enjoying this personally, seeing someone dig their own grave several times over.

[–] [email protected] 31 points 6 days ago (2 children)

People mad about it inherently do not understand the point of federation if they want all instances to basically be .world, except with different mods.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 5 days ago (1 children)

They want the subtle bigotry of liberalism without punishment of their statements and actions.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Either that or they’re literally too daft to understand why trans people would rather see a hundred people with wEiRd PrOnOuNs who may or may not be trolling than see a single person appointing themselves the pronoun police.

Like, it’s not showing me anything I didn’t already know, it’s just ugly to see. Not to get on the soapbox too much, but I think medicalization* of transness and the portrayal of the noble suffering trans person as an archetype kind of inevitably leads to this Very Serious interpretation of gender identity that is just as oppressive as Evangelical takes on gender. Sorry if anyone got the wrong impression, but “MTF + FTM + nonbinary are All The Genders” wasn’t actually what anyone involved in trans liberation was ever fighting for. If this makes (general) you mad, go make that your problem instead of mine.

And I say that as someone that needed surgery and HRT! It will probably actually kill me if HRT gets banned in the US, I’m not saying this as someone with no skin in it. They’re not taking anything from me by existing, and if seeing them makes you go “holy shit we’ve gotta shut this whole trans thing down” then you were always my enemy.

*

That is, treating transness as a medical condition and nothing more, not that any medical treatment for trans people is bad.

wait this gave me a meme idea i think it has legs

is this funny/do you cosign this

[–] [email protected] 7 points 5 days ago

If you want to use it I give you my blessing 🤝

[–] [email protected] 4 points 5 days ago

nevermind this is not funny at least not for this time lol

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 days ago

They want the Fediverse to be a free speech safe haven allowing any and all forms of bigotry and harassment without banning people for it. A lot of early Fediverse promotion promoted it as a free speech safe haven so it's not surprising we got a lot of these dipshits as a result.

Thankfully they're slowly learning they aren't welcome and many have already left to other platforms like Nostr. Hopefully all of them will leave soon.

[–] [email protected] 29 points 6 days ago (1 children)

If PugJesus could look in a mirror, he'd be very upset!

[–] [email protected] 37 points 6 days ago (3 children)

I’ll put the text I put under this same post months ago because I think it still applies:

I don’t think [they’re] a transphobe, but I also don’t think they understand the scale of the harassment trans people face on a daily basis. Like it’s so bad the users would rather just have potential trolls ignored and downvoted than to see well meaning cis people come in and do vigilante justice using the same tactics of abuse trans people go through every day.

That empathetic disconnect looks like transphobia to some users. I don’t know that the users are right, but I understand how you reached that conclusion, especially with [their] ~~days-long~~ [now months-long] soapbox crashout about how despotic Ada is.

[–] [email protected] 20 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Transphobia doesn't have to be intentional to still be transphobia. It also doesn't have to be intentional to hurt someone or cause harm indirectly. The fact that people think gatekeeping gender is okay or that xenogenders are "hurting real trans people" is already harmful in and of itself.

Pug and his associates were told this but they didn't take the hint or look at themselves. They just decided that trans and queer people in the current day are too sensitive. And they kept going. So we really shouldn't excuse them or say they weren't being transphobic, they were. Whether or not they meant it going in.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 5 days ago (1 children)

It's like if someone claimed to be an ally to those hurt by racism, said that "Well I don't understand the idea of Chicanos and I don't really see why I should respect them when one was rude to someone else months ago."

And then other people go "Hey white dude, you're showing your blind spots. You can do better.*

And then the white dude just goes "Why should I have to improve? I'm an anti-racist!"

PugJesus is a cis male who thinks because he uses she/her on a trans woman he's an ally. He's not when he'll gladly toss aside things because someone was rude to someone else online.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (2 children)

Exactly. A person like that isn't a real ally even if they call themselves one. They need to actually support people to be an ally, and that also means checking yourself when people call you out, not just saying that you're an ally and don't need to check yourself.

PugJesus was never an Ally honestly and the fact that him and his asshole friends decided to open up whining threads on [email protected] instead of checking themselves just goes to show that.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Exactly.

You can be declare yourself to be an ally, or anti-"bad thing". The people of those groups decide, not you.

"I'm a stamp collector, I just own zero stamps, I don't listen to anyone who says I should collect stamps, and I say everyone who calls me a false stamp collector is actually hurting the stamp collecting community."

Check the mod and post history of everyone saying Blahaj is a dictatorship or is supporting attack helicopter shit. Every one gatekeeps or says horrid shit.

Meanwhile I've never been called transphobic. Or racist. Or sexist. Because I don't go "I'm actually I'm a true ally you stupid idiot, listen to the guy who isn't part of your group and obey my orders or you're the true bigot!"

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yeah most of them have atrocious moderation history and equally nasty comment history.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

Like certain members who claim blahaj is a dictatorship where you can't descent.

Fuck I typed it wrong. That's embarassing, this is why we need that stupid auto markdown thing removed because I can't use it or it links the community wrong and I have to type it out manually to avoid it being a hard link to the original version

@[email protected] @[email protected] Please make the autocorrect for communities stop filling in a Markdown link like this [[email protected]](https://lemmy.ml/c/lemmy) and just have it autocorrect to the correct annotation like this [email protected]. We don't need it to insert Markdown links like that anymore because the software does it automatically. I don't know if I or someone else already made an issue for it but I think it's also good to show it causing problems on the field too.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 days ago

Oh shit, i did the same thing.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 5 days ago

This is absolutely fair and I have no pushback on your position at all. Thank you for your personal insight. :)

[–] [email protected] 24 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

Which is weird because Ada is pretty hands-off... The way she handled the 196 move to oneninetysix was pretty masterlcass in "hands-off" approach, imho.

I still don't understand what's so hard about just not engaging with those you suspect of trolling with neopronouns.

The one time I accidentally interacted with Drag it wasn't hard to respect drags pronouns. Also, I have personally never seen evidence that drag is actually trolling. Drag seems like a normal Lemmy user.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 6 days ago

Yeah like I'm open to being shown evidence that drag was/is trolling, there are definitely people out there who would do that. But out of quite a few posts I haven't really seen any, and I figured someone would have linked some in the big flame threads sometime.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 6 days ago

The thing is though it doesn't have to be intentional hate to be transphobia. Someone can mean well and still be transphobic. They can believe that trans people deserve to have their rights respected and still be transphobic. And really pretty much anything which "us[es] the same tactics of abuse" almost certainly crosses that line.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Oh, continuing PugJesus drama after they said they were leaving forever because they weren't allowed to misgender peeps?

Shocker.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 5 days ago

PugJesus is just upset they can't be draw a line in the sand gamergaters use for defense.

PJ would argue that he can misgender Chris Chan because she's a bad person. No one else however.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 5 days ago

i apologize if this is triggering :( i censored the one word in the post because i didn’t want to mythologize hurtful people

a while back on this instance the admin, Ada, kicked out some users that were bringing unnecessary and potentially hurtful comments about Trans people and their identities to the instance. this post is just kind of doing commentary and thanking her for that.
