Then I realized there's no engineer in the party to build platforms for the pipes...

There wasn't but, I made a zipline to reach it and call down the pumpjack and one of the other dwarves managed to get the pipe up there, so we could finish the mission.

I think you can build pipe on pipe, so you could build a pile of pipe-ghetti and eventually get anywhere.
