Can’t the renewables fit in the same Space as the agriculture without requiring any extra space for either because the renewables can be above the agriculture?
Yes. Agrivoltaics is a thing and it will become more relevant as the technology develops. But in a place like Australia, it shouldn't be a problem to find unproductive land to put solar panels on. I always find it amusing when fossilheads suddenly start to care about bugs living in the desert when people want to build solar farms.
Kind of, but theres definitely gota be limits to that.
Like energy production through hydro, definitely doesn't work like that. Nuclear won't either, so maybe for batteries, solar and wind its possible for intermixing on farmland, in the gaps, or above.
Also things like power lines crossing wheat farms might be hard to negotiate with farmers.
You know if we all stopped eating the cows in the top right of the picture, 75% of all land used for agriculture is returned to us. The majority of crops grown are used to feed cows.
Very interesting. I like the discussion on the mutual benefits waterways or crops, and solar pv can offer each other.
Like everything in China, that solar/goji farm looked big!
I wonder how much of that agriculture land is only used for cows and sheep. My guess is two thirds.
It'd be a lot, there'd be grain feed to be considered as well as the simple livestock use.
There'd surely be breakdowns of this available. Maybe Cimate Council would have some data.
Below is a screenshot i took Climate Trace, they're using satellites and other tech to identify sources of CO2 equivalent emissions. Agriculture (in red) mightn't be the largest, but its certainly noticeable. That might be another avenue of information on this question to wander down.
