Update: Turns out that I didn't play far enough into the main quest. After joining That space adventure club thing and bringing ~~Lisa~~ Sarah with me I was able to finally get where I needed to be to complete that timed quest.

Thanks to all that helped.

I just started (about 4 hours in) and the game won't let me fast travel to another planet. "Fast travel is currently unavailable to this location".

It's too far away to just fly to (flew for about half an hour before getting bored), so how am I supposed to get there to continue a quest? Am I supposed to just wait it out as I fly there in realtime? What am I missing?

Additionally, some planets/star systems are too far for your grav drive to reach at the moment, and will have to upgrade your ship at higher levels. But you mostly get between planets through the star chart in your menu or use the navigation console in the ship

When I try the star star map or the nav console, it just gives me an error: "Fast travel is currently unavailable to this location". This is really frustrating cause the quest is on a time limit and I don't want to fail it.

Also, how do I activate the "Grav drive"?

Try entering the scanning mode when in your cockpit. The waypoint should pop up and you can travel to it. Otherwise try opening the map and selecting the location.

Already tried that but when I hold down the button to travel to it, nothing happens.

It looks like your destination is about 200lys away, and your grab drive probably can’t go that far. If you’re still only early game probably about 20lys. Might have to wait till later for that mission.

Thanks for your help. But what I don't understand is why the game would give me a quest that I can't complete yet, especially one with a 4 hour time limit? Talk about developer oversight.

You can chaim grav jumps, only thing is you cant do the entire trip in one jump. Fuel resets each time you jump, so ot's only a minor inconvenience to start with.

I still don't know how to actually do a Grav jump, though, and the game isn't helping me.

Do I have to start the main questline first before I can use this "Grav drive" that everyone is taking about in this thread?

It should be very early in the game. Like right after you get the ship.

Turns out that I didn't play far enough in the main quest to be able to jump to where I needed to be. Thanks for the help.

If you have gone to new atlantis, you already grav jumped (so if you have a mission you probably have done it). Grav jumping is just when you go to another system from the map interface (for example, from alfa centauri to sol). If the place you want to go to is too far, you just need to do intermediate jumps (going to systems in betwern)
