Gonna be honest, I forgot Photobucket existed.

Thanks for sharing. I'm glad something is being done about Photobucket. I also forgot I even had an account with them, but started getting emails a few months ago.

I went through the painstaking effort to recover my account info, log in, download my photos (useless stuff) then close the account and I STILL have been getting their emails.

Oh wow I think I had an account with them but it was so long ago I don’t remember my account details nor any of the photos I uploaded.

they wouldn't be there anymore I don't think. If it was the free tier they locked photos behind the premium tier a few years back with a timer saying if you didn't opt into premium and download your photos you within a few months they were going to be nuked, unless it was all scare tactics

doesn't surprise me, this is the same company that held their free tier hostage when they decided to remove it by threatening the users that if they wanted their photos back they needed to buy their premium for a month

I get an email about once or twice a month telling me to recover my photos before their gone. This has been going on for the last year.

I'd like to message them to request access to my own data, I just haven't gotten around to ir. I think they've been giving out a free trial for those that ask.

I finally looked deeper into this. If you follow the steps for account deletion, there's a button at step 3 to request a download link to your content.

I ended up finding a way to delete the login/subscription window which gave access to the UI as if I was a premium member, I laughed, downloaded my photos and then deleted my account. Glad to see they at least have a link now

I have stopped putting images in the cloud for storage. For now they are local on my phone until I can afford to build a server

Ente is a good option to store your files on cloud but I still recommend you encrypt them using PGP before upload to the cloud

To store locally I choose to use M-Discs, they are expensive but the gold standard to long term archival as far as I know

They could have made a (second) fortune selling vaseline, or some water-based lubricant, to their customers.

The less 'digital services' in my life, the better.

edit: forgot a word :p
