The Lemmy place to discuss veganism.

Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of animals, humans and the environment. In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals.

Welcome to the Vegan Theory Club Weekly Megathread!

We’re kicking things off with a space just for vegans! Inspired by our friends over at Hexbear, this thread is the spot to chat about what’s on your mind, what’s happening, and what you’re planning for the week.

Feel free to talk about anything, whether it’s vegan-related or not. This is a chill space for connecting, sharing ideas, and supporting each other.

Looking forward to hearing what everyone’s up to!

Got any ideas?

We’re also taking suggestions for essay topics, recommended readings, or any resources that could help each other out. Feel free to drop in links, ask for advice, or contribute any other materials you think would be useful for the community and we can start adding to the megathread.

Looking forward to hearing what everyone’s up to and what we can explore together!

Check out our communities:

  1. Vegan Home Cooks
  2. Vegan Recipes
  3. Gardening
  4. Vegan
  5. Vegan Infographics
  6. The Bee Hive
  7. Art
  8. Book Club
  9. DIY

The communities are here to help share links and photos for vegans by vegans.

Vegan Home Cooks is a site for a discord server called Vegan Home Cooks Discord. This is a low-friction post-what-you-cooked community so we can share what we made today and talk about it, no recipes required. We want to provide motivation and encouragement for each other and show off what we made today.

Vegan Recipes is focused on how to cook and links to recipe sites.

Gardening is focused on our gardens, plants, hydroponics and learning how to do it. Some of us are pros and some are just learning and want to post what we're reading and what we're doing.

Vegan is for general vegan news

Vegan Infographics for vegan infographics and agitprop

Art All things art, preferably by vegans but not required.

Book Club Our sort of monthly book club, we finished reading Fanon but never had our final post. We're going to get that going and do fiction for September/October. Also post about whatever you are reading!

DIY Do it yourself! This is a community to fix our shit.

Our communities are federated with various other servers running software called Lemmy. If you have an account on one of those servers you can still subscribe to our communities from your home server and participate. If you create an account with us you can also view other federated communities across multiple Lemmy servers we are linked up with.

Thanks for visiting our site!

I'm finding the lemmy users who leave shitty comments and argumentative bullshit more and more tiring.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

I'm smoking weed about it.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 4 weeks ago

Probably more constructive than engaging with them tbh

[–] [email protected] 8 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I blocked them aggressively when I was on .ml. Or mildly goaded a few of them into flying off the handle so I could report them under civility rules. It doesn't usually take much. Seems like vegans on Lemmy have been a growing target lately.

I had an account on .world a long while ago now and pissing off the anti-vegan trolls was something I occasionally loved to indulge in.

I considered it an "everyone wins" situation: I get to have a laugh, the trolls get to interact with another person (unlike the real world) and a lot of the bystanders get to see just how pathetic they are.

That said I understand how it gets old fairly quickly when you have to constantly deal with that shit as a mod on a vegan community. I'm genuinely grateful to hamid, Potato, and the other mods/admins here for not only setting this place up but taking care of it, and it genuinely sucks that there's a loud group of people who really can't take ten seconds to read the sideboard so they don't constantly break rules, or are just flat out here to troll.

I'll be honest even if only 3 people use this server and enjoy it I think its money well spent.

Even without Lemmy World the debbie downers find their way over. I hope it's not too much to manage recently.

There was one user in some of the LW posts that blew up recently who was so annoyingly wrong in the most pedantic manner, but they were also prolific. It's exhausting disproving wave after wave of BS. It always takes more effort to show why something makes no sense than to say something that makes no sense.

There's a term for that! Brandolini's law

I have put my lemm.ee account on pause again. Might take it up again but the willfull ignorance & unearned smugness combo gets to one.

YOU VEGANS ARE TOO EMOTIONAL LET ME GO TO YOUR VEGAN INSTANCE AND TELL PEOPLE TO FUCK OFF

[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 weeks ago

One thing is for sure, emotional means bad and must be dismissed.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 weeks ago

I MUST GO TO THE SKATEBOARD PARK AND TELL PEOPLE TO STOP HAVING FUN.

Autumn is starting where I live. It sucks, my least favorite part of the year. Late summer is cool though

On the post image, Knowing Animals Podcast: Episode 58: Animal Rights in Palestine and Israel with Esther Alloun

This episode of Knowing Animals features Esther Alloun from the University of Wollongong. We discuss her article ‘’That’s the beauty of it, it’s very simple!’ Animal rights and settler colonialism in Palestine–Israel’ which appeared in the journal Settler Colonial Studies in December 2017.

This isn't vegan related but was wondering if anyone here has read "A History of Modern Iran" by Ervand Abrahamian and could share some thoughts on it? Saw this book get recommended over on Lemmygrad a while ago and have read the first couple of chapters so far.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 weeks ago

I would love to read it and will get a copy and host it on the veganhomecooks nextcloud for us at c/bookclub

we were doing monthly books but I think I want to change it around

[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 weeks ago

For the animals!

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 weeks ago

Oh lol thanks! It’s been spring week at work. I’ll post it this morning.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 weeks ago

Hey! We need a new thread for this week!

[–] [email protected] 0 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Noticed that the Discord advocates a more pro-domination/anti-conflict stance to community than this post. A bit confusing...

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I don’t know what this means. There is no government or organization that runs it. My friend started the Vtc discord, the website is its own thing.

I created the website primarily for the vegan home cooks.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Well it does seem like you two started two communities with different and incompatible principles. That's all it was pointing out. it isn't in there so it's not like it affects it but it's just an interesting observation. it was confused but it wasn't planning on dwelling on it.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

I'm not seeing what is different or incompatible though, we both vegans and leftists that are hosting platforms for other people to participate. That is a discord for left unity and this is a website for posting vegan content. We are friends IRL so whatever internet drama people think about tankies and anarchists is not how this plays out with people. We all want the same things but have different ideas on how to accomplish this.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

it does not understand what you're saying or where you're coming from. Not sure what tankies have to do with this. You're interpreting and speaking from a context that everyone else is missing and so what you're saying does not make sense to anyone else. Like apparently there's a tankie and an anarchist involved and there's some kind of internet drama you're referring to that involves your irl friend? But from its point of view it has zero point of reference for what you're saying or what tankies have to do with either this website or your friend who runs the discord.

I didn't start the discord and don't run it. The different sites linked and discords are all run by different people in solidarity as a hobby.
