Breaking Linux support after-the-fact ought to be grounds for a full refund (no matter how much time or hours of play have passed). Valve ought to allow such refunds and forcibly debit Rockstar's Steam publisher account, whether Rockstar likes it or not.

Same thing happened for the whole Bioshock series. They rolled out the update just over 2 weeks after a big sale so it was beyond the standard refund policy too.

Rockstar doesn't officially support Linux though... So it's on valve that they certified it for steam deck. There's no grounds for charging that back to r*

I disagree. I bought a game for all the features it had at the time of buying it. There is no avenue for a consumer to push back against publishers changing that

While if you bought it, it should be source included and you should be able to host your own servers/pick any patch to play on

We don’t have those consumer protections because software is a relatively new thing

The first generation of software for early stored-program digital computers in the late 1940s

80 years isn't "new"

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It really wasn’t a consumer constant in the 40s

While the other person saying 80 years is a bit much, it has been a constant for at least 40 years now.

Personal computing and software isn't new.

Edit: To clarify, 1984 (40 years ago) saw Superbowl ads for the Apple Macintosh and the advent of the CD-ROM.

You’ll have people in governments that remember a time without computers

You’ll have some that don’t understand buying is just renting because it wasn’t a thing

Even 30 years is pushing it as a widespread thing for home use 30 years ago would fall into the second group

I'll agree that 40 may be a bit too far given some of the real dinosaurs in government. That being said, dating myself here but I have very fond memories of personal computing in the early 90s, even playing games online!

I think my first notebook ran Windows 95 but I knew people that didn’t have computers

[–] [email protected] 18 points 1 month ago

Well they are still selling in-game money without letting anyone know that they possibly cannot use it. But guess what rockstar, if I have to choose between your games and Linux, Linux wins every time. Later...

If you can't play online might as well pirate it

[–] [email protected] 31 points 1 month ago (1 children)

BattleEye can't stop scripting mod hacks in any other game I've ever played using it and that's the number one kind of cheat used in GTA V. 🤦‍♂️

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

That's super interesting. It would not be the first time Rockstar have put measures in place on GTA Online for them to be completely ineffective.

Article update:

Update #1 - 14:31 UTC: Rockstar have now put up an official FAQ for BattlEye where they state:

Is BattlEye compatible with Steam Deck?

Steam Deck does not support BattlEye for GTA Online. You will be able to play GTAV Story Mode but unable to play GTA Online.

Note: GTAV and GTA Online are not officially supported on Steam Deck and all technical support questions should be directed to Valve’s Steam Deck support content and community.

I'm still currently waiting for an official statement from Rockstar on any plans to enable it, since BattlEye as mentioned below is supported on Linux / Steam Deck.

I'm glad I never played GTA V for the multiplayer. The load times were enough to make me lose interest.

I'm not afraid to admit that I played the game a lot and that shit cost me weeks of my life. I'd usually watch MSNBC videos on the second screen while the other one was showing the clouds above LS.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago

I did like the racing in the game but the load time was too unbearable. I think I only logged like three hours into GTA online before I dropped it completely.

Well I wasn't planning on playing GTA 5 but now I guess it'll have to be pirated GTA 5 only so I can play a pre-anticheat version. It sucks that GTA is a game where all the mod developers try hard to make their stuff not work on pirated versions. Guess I'll be avoiding that entire toxic community as a whole. Cyberpunk a better game anyway.

A few months ago, I would be very upset about this, but the game kinda got old a while ago.

I wonder if online play will actually be tolerable now.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago

So I wonder what my copy from rockstar will do now, it worked like a week ago under wine(single player). I bought it before it was available on steam unfortunately.

That said gta online was never good so idgaf about that part but Battle eye isnt going to do shit so sucks for those that do care.
