Welcome to Globe.pub, a community for travelers! This is the community for general discussion that doesn't fit anywhere else on the site.

MODERATORS

Hi everyone! I'm Matt, the admin of this instance.

I put together Globe.pub after leaving Reddit and wishing that alternatives existed for the communities that I used to frequent there. I'm a software engineer in my work, so starting up a Lemmy server has been a good test of my skills.

Some places I've been:

  • France: I visited every few years when I was growing up. My parents wanted me to meet my mom's side of the family, who moved from Manila to a village east of Paris when my grandparents moved there in their old age. I'm still trying to keep my French fresh.
  • Japan: I visited for the first time this year and I'm absolutely enthralled. I can't get enough of the modern cities and the proximity to beautiful nature.
  • Ireland: I have family in Cork that I love to visit, and Dublin is full of the loveliest people. I had a trip planned to Galway in March 2020 😬 and I'd like to see more of the countryside too.
  • Philippines: I visited once in 2010 and finally got back to see the family this year.

These days I'm trying to travel internationally more – as much as my job allows – and I'm getting into scuba as an inexpensive adventure hobby. I'm looking forward to traveling to warm water locations to get those dives under my belt.

I'd love to hear about you too – please post your own intro here in Main!

Wow! You have family everywhere!

Have you thought about French Polynesia for diving?

Yes — it’s on my list! I only have a dozen dives logged, and I’d like to get some more so that I can join a liveaboard there in the future.

Regarding scuba, it’s worth noting that it’s incompatible with air travel to some extent. I heard a story about a guy who did a scuba dive on vacation somewhere, then got on a plane and experienced intense pain as the aircraft gained altitude because the nitrogen level in his body can’t take the pressure differences (or something like that). The pilot was forced to fly at a low altitude for the entire trip to prevent the diver from suffering. It’s probably part of scuba training but thought it should be mentioned.
