Imagine an alien civilization for which the idea of orbiting a star is impossible to fathom... So cool!

I wonder if they could have a super hot, super dense core that gives them the chance of an atmosphere and a warm surface. Bioluminescent everything. It would be like looking at a blacklight poster on heated seats.

There's a book series, the first of which is called Dark Eden, which is set on a planet substantially like that 🙂

Or enough radiation to be warm enough.

Imagine an alien civilisation that is capable of moving planets through deep space as a mode of transport.

Why are they always Rogue planets? Never any Cleric or Barbarian planets.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 2 months ago (1 children)

If they weren't rogues you'd have already discovered them by now. Barbarians aren't quiet and clerics are always talking.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 months ago

What about Rangers? They're usually about as quiet as Rogues, but they often bring a companion with them, so they should be a bit easier to spot.

Cause as DPS it's harder to find a group.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 months ago

I don't know, but I'm a big fan of cowboy and mafia planets.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

Barbarian planets are called meteors.

[–] [email protected] 26 points 2 months ago (1 children)

They can crash at my place

Pluto you don't have to rush, you could leave a toothbrush...

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 months ago

Oh, I'm sorry...I thought I wasn't really a planet!? But when you're horny, everything suddenly changes.

Haven’t seen any JWST content in a while. Thank you

This is the technology post I want to see, seems these days it’s mostly just about bad company practices.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 months ago

There still out for delivery :)

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago

But how will they know what movies to watch or what's the latest in fashion?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

I know this is possibly the wrong forum to talk about it in but this is the form it was posted in so...

There is some pretty good theories that suggest that the vast majority of planets are rogue planets. We just don't really think about them because they're hard to find. This fact is backed up by the fact that they've managed to just find six of them.

A lot of this stems from the fact that stellar formation is massively chaotic and a lot of stuff gets ejected from the solar system as a result. Jupiter for example has collected an awful lot of moons, because of its intense gravity, but it will have also kicked an equal number of objects out of the solar system all together. Gas giants seem to be fairly common throughout the galaxy, so it's fair to say It's probably a ton of stuff out there that's nowhere near a star.

Surprisingly little sci-fi is set on rogue planets.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

Our system will adopt them!

[–] [email protected] -3 points 2 months ago (3 children)

as would the gravitational interactions that would yeet them out into the big, wide galaxy.

Please stop using slang words in professional writings. It's embarrassing.

It's communication to the public, not an official paper. When talking to the public, you meet them on their level. You knew what it meant, so mission accomplished.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago

I think its a good use of yeet

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

It’s in the vernacular now. You only notice it because you’re older than the term. For a Zoomer or younger Millennial, it won’t stand out so much.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago

I'm an older millennial who generally dislikes new words like that but this is the one that I fully accept. It's just a good word, you don't need any prior knowledge the understand it either, it just works.
