Just doing a walkabout and looks like Mr slug has gone to town additionally a lot of the first blooms are looking a bit ropey. Am I ok to do a decent dead head and prune Based in uk

Looks fungal to me. I would just let it do its thing and come back in the spring, being careful to pick up any lost leaves.

If there's other bushes nearby you're afraid of infecting then i would cut it back, or spray it with captan depending on your views on that sort of thing

You can dead head the blooms but I'm not sure they'd come back this late in the season.
