I don’t get their motivation behind this change. I mean I read the write-up they posted, but I don’t get how they could seriously think this is a better experience for users.
it's a better experience for corpos that want their brand name to be uniquely identifiable.

It's based on nitro but also how old your account is. I don't have nitro but joined in 2016 and got a message to update mine last week
oh my old discord account was banned a while back so I had made a new one lol. I guess that's why. I also don't pay for nitro.
