Was spam a big issue here?

No, spam wasn't an issue. This community was simply looking abandoned; I had a "seeking mods" post up for six months and got no responses. It's also another case of Lemmy community fragmentation. Hopefully having fewer, better-moderated communities for a given topic will drive more user engagement than spreading posts over lots of little-used communities.
In hindsight I should have pinned an explanatory post beforehand so users could weigh in. I will do that in the future.
I'd rather fragmentation than closing communities and directing to another Lemmy.world community. There's enough consolidation there as is.
Many times I've come across a dead community and have been able to breathe some sustainable life into it.

I'd appreciate that. I don't like the idea of this instance having fewer and fewer communities leaving us to rely on the spotty whims of lemmy.world admins.
If you're interested in taking over Best of Mastodon (or if anyone else expresses interest) then I can certainly unlock it.
Good to know that's an option. Thanks.
Thanks!
