I had the issue that when giving Miez her medication, it would not work properly as she was only breathing superficially. Didn't help either that she mostly starts purring once I pick her up, as according to the vet that is only superficially as well. She said we could give her a different medication first to expand her airways so that this medication can reach where it should. To avoid this, I had an idea: Get her worked up a little beforehand by throwing treats down the stairs.

Then I'll give her the spray as usual. Notice how she now breathes in with some effort? I can see through a little green flap that works as a valve that she now breathes in deeply, as I was aiming for.

Afterwards she gets her other treat, a multi vitamin paste (currently with some digestion medicine mixed into it) as a thank you.

Sound on for purr tax

Ton an für die Schnurr-Steuer

Amazing! And she looks so well-behaved!

The only crime she commits from time to time is to hop on the counter (strictly forbidden of course) to fetch the sponge and tear it to shreds, which made me buy sponges with one scratchy side and one fat removal side as she only shreds the yellow side. Otherwise, she really is an angel. I can even let her into the garden mostly unsupervised (only with a tracker and from time to time looking out the window) and she won't leave the premises.

We just had to start doing the aerokat with one of ours. I was dreading it, but it has actually gone pretty well.

I'm sure this was just for the picture, but you do need to keep the inhaler in the back of it until they've done the 10 breaths, I think.

We are also giving the same cat a steroid. There's a pharmacy that compounds it into a dermal gel that we just rub on his inner ear. Getting pills into that cat was hard, but he doesn't mind the dermal at all. (And we're expert cat pill givers - a previous feline resident of our house needed many.)

The vet said 30 seconds to a minute. I just estimate the minute but nothing about still attached inhaler. Why do you need to keep the inhaler on? The spray is already in the chamber, isn't it? It seems to be working really well this way, so I just don't leave it on.

What's the purpose of the steroids? I can basically give her everything as long as it can be grinded and mixed with that paste.

On ours, the back of the aerokat is open, so removing the inhaler would let the drugs out. Yours looks like it might have some kind of restrictive flap though.

The steroids were the initial attempt to control his asthma. It worked pretty well for a while (a year, maybe more), but a few weeks ago he went into respiratory distress so we rushed him to the animal hospital. So now it's steroids plus inhaler! He's been doing a lot better under the current regimen.

We too have an asthmatic kitty and follow much the same process. Our girl is on 5mg prednisolone daily now as her asthma is so severe that the inhaler barely did anything. The difference is huge - she still gets congested in the spring from all the pollen, but is otherwise asymptomatic.

That is brilliant!
