Kismet Blade - Losing My Edge
#Monthofweckoning

Today I decided to see what sgrdddy's (@[email protected]) slurry lather could do to provide me with an efficient 2-pass shave. I put my synthetic brush in a mug of water, looked at my phone to get the time then turned the phone to hide the display.

I opened the soap, loaded my slurry, and shaved. I completed my full-face shave including aftershave and EdP 10 minutes later when I looked at the phone again. After this, it took almost 3 minutes to clean up, though, so I need to figure out how to make less of a mess.

Nonetheless, I'm completely happy with this. A 2-pass BBS shave in 10 minutes with no nicks or irritation is totally acceptable with a straight razor. With the Weck, I don't need any cleanup on my neck and I don't need to take chances and be Weckless (@[email protected]) to achieve this this result.

And there are definitely areas for improvement in this process. Perhaps I can cover more facial area between rinses. Maybe I can modify my patterns so I change hands less often. This will be fun to play with.

I spent a lot of time looking at the blade with the microscope today; comparing edge condition with previous photos. I am seeing very slight wear on the edge overall but this is in areas that I haven't imaged before. The heel, center, and toe sections of the blade look very similar to past photos. There are now 10 areas of noticeable degradation, albeit very small. Until today, there were 8. I cannot feel any of this during the shave.

  • Preshave: Cold Water
  • Brush: Zenith 506U XS Horse 🐎
  • Razor: Edwin Jagger DE89
  • Blade: Astra Superior Platinum (11)
  • Lather: The Goodfellas Smile Amber Fougère
  • Post Shave: Old Spice After Shave

My skin is still dry-ish, but it looks manageable. The frag burn is greatly reduced by bowl lathering, though there are still slight traces of it. So it seems like I'm still in the game!

Have a good day!

䷀ General Notes

Simple quick slurry lather and shave.

䷀ Razor and Blade Notes

(Timeless - Stainless Steel .68 - Open Comb ::: Gillette - Nacet - M ‹509 uses›)

Same: First pass has some tugginess to it. But no irritation that lasts longer than a little tuggy stroke. Latter passes feel fine and give a reasonably close shave. 5 pretty quick passes.

Razor and Blade Performance/Comfort Rating: 2 out of 5 (Okay)

䷀ Soap Notes

(Chiseled Face - Midnight Stag - White Label)

I just love all the aspects of this scent!

Scent Strength: 6/10, nicely present during shaving.

Lather... Short on time, so it's the slurry lather today. Worked well, though the 3rd pass didn't have as much moisture as some previous attempts. Simple to add a bit of water to the brush though.

Hydration: Perfect (for me)

  • 2 sec load with a Very Wet brush
  • = 5 passes of lather

Bowl: No Bowl

䷀ Brush Notes

(Zenith - r/wetshaving MOAR BOAR B35/508A XL ‹34 uses›)

Same: Comfortable soft tips that do flex some, but that are supported by a base with strong backbone. As with all young boars, I look forward to the tips splitting with more uses and getting softer with use.

During the Shave Feel:
  Cheeks: Felt blade but comfortable
  Neck: Felt blade but comfortable
After the Shave Closeness:
  Cheeks: Close Shave
Neck: Several hairs are showing some tip length (still a pretty good shave)
