It has been looming for decades. But the government continues to shift things to prevent it, which is kind of what their job is. Can they shift things forever though? Idk, I'm not an economist or an accountant.

I think you'd do well to read this article - the message is that not only is it not looming, it's not really even theoretically possible. The whole concept of a nation borrowing in its own currency having a debt crisis is incoherent and has never happened.
