There's been an influx of content surrounding lemmy here. Some of it is open ended:

  • "What kinds of things from reddit would you like to see Lemmy avoid as the user base grows?"
  • "Lemmy, what do you call users of Lemmy?"

And these are a-ok! There's also been a lot of questions like

  • "How do I block a user?"
  • "How do I join a community on a different instance"

These aren't open ended (at least, relatively). They are objective based, and just need a resolution, rather than discussion. These sort of questions are more relevant to !lemmy_support@lemmy.ml.

I know there's also questions like "What are you guys doing when there’s multiple communities for the same thing across instances?". I'm inclined to let those stay, there is lots of opportunity for discussion. It's a game of discretion from a moderation perspective, but I assume most can easily guess what is cold hard support.

At least from me, moderation of support posts has been sporadic at best, despite the long standing rule. I will begin redirecting these questions to !lemmy_support@lemmy.ml, however I'm of course willing to listen to the community here if that's not what is wanted, as well as other feedback.

edit: support posts will now be removed, not locked

For now, i don't know how to explain it and make it comprehensible to tech illiterate, let alone incite them to give a try for longer than the very short term.

If you are yourself a tech illiterate, which method worked for you?

If the tech illiterate is someone you know, which method was successful to convince them?

What client do Android users use for Lemmy these days? I've been using Jerboa from the start but it's a bit basic and lacks any good search functionality. So I want to try some others. What do other Android users recommend?

Things I like about Jerboa:

  • It just works. It's pretty simple.
  • It has actual private browsing in app. You never have to leave the app and it knows how to never save your history.
  • It can do the above even when setting your main browser to Firefox (so as blocking works even in open links in app).

Things I don't like about Jerboa:

  • Text entry is oftentimes buggy.
  • Lack of any decent search for communities or in threads.
  • No draft capability.

Mine is Lost Highway. It's one of the most amazing pieces of media I've ever experienced. It's dark, surreal, and I still don't know what it's about for sure. I have my own interpretation, as do many others. Who's right? We'll never know. The film is a fucking trip. I highly recommend.

Maybe it's a different contract for the corporate/gov setting, but if the clause is in there, this would it make it non compliant for real work, as basically the copilot contract goes against the normal contract made to purchase the Office suite and the contract intentions, as misleading contracts could be judicialized.

There are about 30 countries that share the same currency name "Dollar" (USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Brunei, Singapore, Barbados, Fiji, Cayman Islands & etc.). but they are not related to each other besides their name, since they have different values from one another, even though they share the same currency symbol: only thing that distinguishes them apart is the country prefix tied to $ (like US$, AU$, NZ$, C$, CI$, FJ$, SG$, Bds$, JA$, B$, etc.).

-When i screamed to a person because she was abusive towards a friend who has really a heart of gold. Usually, i never scream to anyone and feel guilty pretty easily, so people must have seriously crossed the line.

-When i ask for a hug. I'm not tactile and hugging is uncomfortable for me, even with persons i like, so when i'm the one who ask, be sure i really really like you.

Whether you travel abroad, in regards to cash withdrawals: the ATM knows the card is from your home country, so it brings up dynamic currency conversion (which is the ATM's own quoted rate), giving you the option to choose that or continue without it (leaving that up to your home bank instead). For example: you decide to withdraw 300€ from the ATM but the machine's exchange is 300€ = $410 (which is a rip off).

But, if one continues to not use DCC: the bank does the conversion from their end, in this case it comes out as $358 including a $5 transaction fee (more like $353). The same applies to contactless payments, as at some establishments, the reader will give you a choice between local currency or the one from your home country, do you pick the one that's already converted or pay in local currency leaving it up to the bank?

I usually use AdNauseam in the 'active' mode, which blocks ads in addition to clicking on them. Recently, I've been having to switch to the 'strict' mode more often, which is more aggressive in blocking, but we lose out on the clicking.

I'm guessing this has something to do with maintaining profits while the price of oil skyrockets. Is it just me being paranoid, or are others noticing this as well?

It's a damn shame websites have to lose out on more ad revenue by being greedy pieces of shit, but they reap what they sow.

I'm quite surprised. From the outside, how the US appears, I would have expected Trump to do some BS or the courts threw it out because free speech for psychopaths etc. But somehow that didn't happen?

Question about AI (lemmy.world)

As I've said elsewhere, I'm a little older. I hear a lot about AI. I'm just trying to figure out what's "good" AI, what's "bad" and if there's even a difference. I do know that there's the whole stealing content to train AI bs going on, but is it deeper? Is there such a thing as good AI? Just trying to learn so I can be better person

Linux help (lemmy.world)

I'm over 50 and all I know about Linux is it's mascot is a penguin and I think it has something to do with programming. But I'm trying to learn, do new things, and reinvent myself. Where/how should I go about learning? Or at this stage, should I even bother? I do want to learn, tho

All the James Bond movies were on MGM+, but they left MGM+ to go to Netflix in January. However, all the movies are leaving Netflix on April 20th (today). My question is: do I now have to pay for MGM+ so I can watch all the movies? Because I didn’t get to watch them all while they were on Netflix.

I'm not a political person but I've noticed that for example Reddit has a more left leaning moderation in comparison to what X (Twitter) is.

For example, if someone does hate speech against LGBT people on X and you report them the moderation team will tell you that the content didn't break the rules and guidelines, but if you as an LGBT person answer to the homophobic conservatives with the same energy you'll get a 24 hours suspension from posting or interacting.

I've personally experienced this many times and it's making me so annoyed specially since there's huge accounts on X that are dedicated to spread extreme hate even wishing death on other people.

spoilerPersonally? No, absolutely not. There should be no differentiating between what can be measured, and what cannot.

I can't help but look at the reproducibility issue in "Psychology" and notice, what did they do about it? Nothing. It just exists. It's not real science.

A heartfelt appeal to anyone who can extend a hand of mercy:

Each day our hardship grows heavier, and the burden becomes greater than we can bear, while even the most basic necessities feel out of reach. My eight children need food and essential items that can preserve their dignity and help them endure this harsh reality.

Any support, no matter how small, can make a real difference in our lives and give us a little hope in the midst of this pain.

If you cannot help, sharing our appeal may reach someone who can.
