I had a senior in my last Ruby job who told me to keep metaprogramming to the minimum and after learning more about design and architecture I'm so glad he taught me that mindset lol. Metaprogramming is very tempting when you have a lot of repeated code that could be drastically reduced, but the whole team needs to be able to understand and work on it too, and not everyone is familiar with these features, nor should they.

People abroad making less money has more to do with the cost of living, different regulations and so on, not necessarily skill. I'm a mid developer with years of professional experience and my salary is shit for US standards, but it allows me to live okayish here, so that's why we put up with it. Immigrants also often face a precarious position (such as a visa status being tied to their work, or prosecution by the authorities, or not being part of a union in an otherwise unionized industry, etc), so them getting paid badly is, again, not always related to skill. I've met Arab doctors who are cab drivers in Europe.

That doesn't address the climate or jobs question though, both require organizing

First of all, the US won't beat China because they deindustrialized and China is the factory of the world. This won't change short of a nuclear holocaust.

Second of all, most environmentalists want investment in greener energy so that we don't destroy the world if we can avoid that. China already makes cheap renewables, and it will only get cheaper still. Europe's energy crisis is tied to importing expensive US energy and not even trying to go renewable so they break off that dependency.

Third, as the US makes the world economy implode with a new stupid war the price of energy will only keep going up and up, so countries that heavily rely on importing energy will suffer a lot. You can't techbro your way out of this, and this should be obvious, but no amount of ethnic cleansing can reindustrialize an economy. Not only is his whole ideology appalling for anyone with a modicum of empathy, it's also not grounded in reality. But no, I'm sure if we all just believe in capitalism and fascism hard enough things will magically get better! Come on guys, the US is doing that and it's TOTALLY not just a bubble!!!!

I feel you, but most of us don't work for silicon valley, in most countries the salaries are average to slightly above average, and being fired or forced to work with tools you don't want sucks, which is also a workers issue
