Basically Google Maps by Apple on iOS

[-] [email protected] 3 points 3 days ago

Indeed, that's a good question 🤔 An interesting solution might have been to leave the app free and make certain functions like speed cameras or real-time traffic accessible with the €1/year subscription. (I'm not saying it's a good solution, it's just an idea)

For my part, I'm more concerned about the "subscription" aspect. I'd have been prepared to pay €10 to get Magic Earth for life. But at 99 cents a year, it doesn't seem like much, and there's no guarantee that it'll become monthly or more expensive, for example.

Exactly !

On the other hand, I find Magic Earth rather poor when it comes to POIs, finding an establishment, finding out the opening hours of a place, and so on.

In the end, I use CoMaps + Apple Plans for points of interest and timetables, and Magic Earth for navigation.

For me, the CoMaps (or OrganicMaps) application is pretty good for the map side of things. On the other hand, when it comes to navigation, I find Magic Earth much more complete (speed camera display, better traffic management, optimized interface for landscape navigation, reporting of road events, better precision of lanes to follow, and I'm forgetting many others).

Recently, Magic Lane (the company that makes the Magic Earth application) completely renewed their interface and general operation.

To use the application, you now have to pay €0.99/year. Personally, I find this price more than reasonable for supporting a European alternative to Google Maps.

I downloaded the app just to see what the interface looked like and when I got to the app, it turns out that you can't access the app without automatically signing up for a subscription (even though there's a free trial period, for me this is clearly a redflag).

Hello everyone!

I'm posting this because I need help upgrading my PC components. However, I don't know where to start.

Here are my current specs:

Operating system : Nobara Linux

Processor : AMD Ryzen 5 5600, 6x 3500 MHz

CPU cooler : Deepcool Gammaxx C40

Graphic card : ASUS Radeon RX 6800, ASUS TUF-RX6800-O16G-GAMING, 16 GB GDDR6

Motherboard : ASUS TUF B450-PLUS GAMING II

RAM : 32 GB DDR4-RAM, Dual Channel (4x 8 GB), 3200 MHz

Storage :I have several SSDs so that's fine

Case : Deepcool CL500, black.

Power supply : 750 Watt MSI MPG A750 GF, 90% efficiency (80 Plus Gold certified)

I would like to point out that I play on a 2k 144hz 27" monitor and I want to stick with full AMD because it's more convenient for me on Linux.

Even though I don't think there's a bottleneck, I'm looking to improve my setup primarily because I play The Finals in 2k, and with the graphics on low, I often drop below 80 fps at times (I would like to stay at 120fps).

Thank you for reading!

Hello, recently, the Roblox client "Sober" has been requesting more permissions since the latest update.

  • Screen content
  • Personal subfolder of execution app/com.discord.Discord
  • Personal subfolder of execution discord-ipc-0

Does this seem suspicious to you?

(I'm not taking into account Roblox's privacy policy, which is bad, just the Sober client)

I didn't want to justify my choice, but I have a slight handicap in my hand that prevents me from using large smartphones easily. (Malformation of the little finger)

Try and find me an Android phone the size of my iPhone 13 mini were you can put a privacy friendly os, and yes, we'll talk.

I've been on CalyxOs for over two years, but the pixels are too big, so the iPhone 13 mini was the best compromise for my privacy and my disability.

I know it's not perfect, but that's no reason to criticise it gratuitously without knowing the context.

What's more, Apple Maps in France isn't very effective, so it's not a convincing alternative.

I've been using Magic Earth for daily navigation for 5 years now and I love it! However, when it comes to finding up-to-date points of interest, historical sites, obtaining opening times for certain places, etc., etc., it's mission impossible… This is why I m asking 😉

Hello everyone! Long story short, I switched from CalyxOS to iOS because the Pixel 5 was too big for me.

Now that I'm on iOS, I'd like to know if there was a way to use google maps anonymously/privately.

I used to use the GMapsViewer application on Fdroid. Today the solution I've found is to use Firefox focus and go to the Google Maps site, but it's a bit of a mess to find a simple address.

Do you have another idea for me? Thanks in advance!

Orion on iOS is a web browser compatible with most of firefox extentions! I use it everyday and I’m happy with it :)

I don't see anyone talking about it here but I'd dream of an open source alternative to AndroidTV/Apple Tv. Firstly because ATV is ultra-dependent on Google, and secondly because the interface is unclear and not really pretty.

Today I've switched to Apple TV, which is much better in terms of UX, but the OS is too closed and sideloading isn't possible...

So I hope to see some sort of CalyxOS / LineageOS for Tv arrive one day!

I use it every day. The results are much better than Duckduckgo, but maybe that's because I'm French and it's a French service.

I don't know how good it is for non-French customers.
