I've created a new Lemmy instance at dullsters.net

When I created this community several months ago I had no aspirations of it becoming much of anything. In a short amount of time it has grown to over 1500 subscribers and is one of the top recommended non-political communities. I am always looking forward to the posts that are shared here, and the unique culture being developed.

I see the importance of the decentralized aspect of the Fediverse. We frequently see drama surrounding moderation and federation policies. None of that applies to the content in this community.

I have no qualms with admins running their site the way they want to and they are often placed in difficult positions. However, this is one of the true places of neutrality on the Fediverse and it should remain that way.

In the few months this community has existed there have been maybe a half dozen moderation actions taken. You have remained, for the most part, very dull, and I thank you for that.

The name of the community should be changed, I hadn't realized that dull men's club was the result of someone else's ideas and work. The new name should represent this community that you all have created and the place it exists, The Fediverse.

The new instance won't have any users except for the purpose of moderation, you will still use your account from a federated instance. I'm still ironing out a few wrinkles with the site, it should be done whenever I get around to it.

In the meantime suggestions for the new name should be made in a top level comment so that they can be voted on.

Thank you all once again for making this community what it is.

This is a tad embarrassing. You see, I thought that I was merely copying a popular Facebook group. I was unaware that Dull Men's Club was an official club. Please give the site a peruse as it is quite a delight!

Finally broke and searched it. This is normal, right? I mean everyone forgets things they've always known sometimes, right?

Mother's day survey (lemmy.world)

Quick question, how do you celebrate Mother's day? This will be the first for me and a box of chocolate seem too dull even for me.

I dug a hole. (thelemmy.club)

It is about 60 centimeters deep. The spade was less useful than the small pickaxe-thingy, which I used to loosen the ground. I intend to plant a tree in the hole. That is all.

Nearly time to organize the tools in there. At last!

Gotta keep up to date with my vaccines.

A few weeks ago, I got another booster of my TBE vaccine.

I also need to get a Shingles shot.

(less) Fun fact, in the past Shingles was also called "helveteseld" in Swedish, it translates to "hell's fire" in English.

Assembled a new shed (thelemmy.club)

Tore down our old DIY hardwood shed and assembled a new plastic resin shed. Used an existing wood frame from the old shed as the foundation. Wrapped the foundation in a heavy duty tarp to protect against moisture. Stays dry, critters aren't interested in living in it, looks ok.

The Mrs is happy I won't be spending so long in the garage now. It's ended up being bigger than I thought and is a huge eyesore, but it works fine.

My kids are playing a lot of video games these days. They play a few indie games and Nintendo Switch games. I wanted to give them their own device, but wanted to stay on a low budget in this PC hardware pricing environment. So I thought I would make a poor man's Steam machine/Gabe cube. I took inspiration from this YouTube video about making a broken laptop into a media PC. So I bought a broken laptop (smashed screen and dented case). Got it pretty cheap in an eBay auction (HP ENVY 17-da0503sa - Intel Core Ultra 5 125H - 16GB DDR5 RAM). Took the working parts out and made a case for it.

I wanted to increase the TDP to its full potential and add a cooling mod to make it silent. Unfortunately the machine wouldn't start properly without the original fan attached and the TDP was hardware locked. Noisy fan curves were also hardware locked. In any case, I got Bazzite on it and it seems to run their indie PC games and Switch emulated games at 60 FPS fine. Half pleased and half disappointed, but using it for now. Might upgrade in the future and make this a server PC instead, but it is working for its intended purpose for now. I need to push some metal mesh across the front to finish up. I've been a PC gamer for a long time and I'm enjoying doing some couch gaming with split screen Mario Kart 8.

I swung out too far on a left turn last week, and I knocked the mirror off on a trashcan. I ordered a replacement from eBay, took the inside door panel off, unscrewed the old one, screwed the new one in, and put the door panel back together.

A day later as planned ( had dinner with my wife yesterday ) but who lives up to planning anyway?

Cleaned out the chimny today and now : smoked shotgunshells. 1.5 hours to go but damn, the smell of smoke is so fine!

No speakers outside to play viny so .... Gonna grab my guitar. My guitar skills are like my welding. I'm no good, but I have so much fun doing it I even sometimes succeed.

My girlfriends icemaker suddenly stopped working the other day and since I had a day off today, I figured I could try and fix it.

After some troubleshooting, it seemed like the fan stopped working, so I grabbed an old PC fan that just so happened to be the same size, wired it in, and presto, one less thing in the landfill and a happy gf.

I do love an easy fix.

This is off a customer bicycle. A Jetson from Costco, I noticed it was stripped while adjusting the rear brake.

I replaced entirely in the moment but used the discarded part to learn how to do it better next time.

Commercials for bear, sherman williams, etc show up around and everyone sees them eventually. Has anyone actually found a cheap paint that covers well and looks nice (water based for indoor) that is cheap and worth the idea of experimenting or doing a room that you know you will have to repaint white later before you move out. Been here 4 years, no real plans of leaving, fuck I put a chicken coop out back a near 2 years ago.. but I know a day will come when they say "hey your rent is going up drastically or you can't have pets or something"

Sadly they switched from year leases to month to month 3 years ago (after the first year) but I figure at some point maybe it is worth just painting something to make it more homeish than damnit I'm still here

I don’t know the guy but I have been seeing this “needs some love” firebird covertabale.

I’ll send picks when he gets back home…. Because he got it running and taking it for a drive.

When I saw him crank it in the first time in forever I gave him a thumbs up.

Then he got into the car. AND DROVE IT!

He got his project car running! The dream!

When he passed me I was clapping but I honestly thought of saluting.

I hope he has a wife who rolled her eyes when he talked about and now she’s begging to go for a joyride. And I hope he says no lol

Our microwave kept blowing the breaker even after repairs, so I (somehow) found a perfect used one on Craigslist and replaced it today.

Surprisingly easy to remove the old one and remount it, plus I saved several hundred dollars in appliance and installation costs.

My wife is dogsitting, which means:

  • no tv but music. Vinyl (judas priest, saxon, iron maiden, g3, alquin, solution etc)
  • dinner comes only from brikettes/charredwood/open fire
  • garlic and chillipeppers are main ingredients for everything.

So i prepared to smoke shotgun shells tomorrow and today .... i'll have to try the dogburger/burgerdog... Whatever. But that's NOT my fault, someone posted it and i saw cast-iron so here we are. For the finial phase (because i'm no idiot) i wrap them in bacon. Beans... Gota find beans for chilli the day after tomorrow......

1. Relevant commentary on your own dull life. Posts should be about your own dull, lived experience. This is our most important rule. Direct questions, random thoughts, comment baiting, advice seeking, many uses of "discuss" rarely comply with this rule.

2. Original, Fresh, Meaningful Content.

3. Avoid repetitive topics.

4. This is not a search engine
Use a search engine, a tradesperson, Reddit, friends, a specialist Facebook group, apps, Wikipedia, an AI chat, a reverse image search etc. to answer simple questions or identify objects. Also see rule 1, “comment baiting”.

There are a number of content specific communities with subject matter experts who can help you.

Some other communities to consider before posting:

5. Keep it dull. If it puts us to sleep, it’s on the right track. Examples of likely not dull: jokes, gross stuff (including toes), politics, religion, royalty, illness or injury, killing things for fun, or promotional content. Feel free to post these elsewhere.

6. No hate speech, sexism, or bullying No sexism, hate speech, degrading or excessively foul language, or other harmful language. No othering or dehumanizing of anyone or negativity towards any gender identity.

7. Proofread before posting. Use good grammar and punctuation. Avoid useless phrases. Some examples: - starting a post with "So" - starting a post with pointless phrases, like "I hope this is allowed" or “this is my first post” Only share good quality, cropped images. Do not share screenshots of images; share the original image.
