I've created a new Lemmy instance at dullsters.net

When I created this community several months ago I had no aspirations of it becoming much of anything. In a short amount of time it has grown to over 1500 subscribers and is one of the top recommended non-political communities. I am always looking forward to the posts that are shared here, and the unique culture being developed.

I see the importance of the decentralized aspect of the Fediverse. We frequently see drama surrounding moderation and federation policies. None of that applies to the content in this community.

I have no qualms with admins running their site the way they want to and they are often placed in difficult positions. However, this is one of the true places of neutrality on the Fediverse and it should remain that way.

In the few months this community has existed there have been maybe a half dozen moderation actions taken. You have remained, for the most part, very dull, and I thank you for that.

The name of the community should be changed, I hadn't realized that dull men's club was the result of someone else's ideas and work. The new name should represent this community that you all have created and the place it exists, The Fediverse.

The new instance won't have any users except for the purpose of moderation, you will still use your account from a federated instance. I'm still ironing out a few wrinkles with the site, it should be done whenever I get around to it.

In the meantime suggestions for the new name should be made in a top level comment so that they can be voted on.

Thank you all once again for making this community what it is.

This is a tad embarrassing. You see, I thought that I was merely copying a popular Facebook group. I was unaware that Dull Men's Club was an official club. Please give the site a peruse as it is quite a delight!

Michaels, the craft supply store, sells Gildean t-shirts which aren't bad for $3 each. They come in a rainbow of colors. They are in the fabric arts section

I mentioned that I’d never been in an electric vehicle before, so he just told me to hop in, and we went for a spin around the block - even tested the acceleration a bit.

This is one of the perks of being self-employed: I’m free to do things completely unrelated to my work if I feel like it. And honestly, it’s amazing to see how kind people are outside the internet. My faith in humanity is being restored one customer at a time.

My volunteering has been impeding my chance to make the pickup window for the local bagelry selling their bagels cheaply that are leftover at the end of the day. As I'm getting better at the jobs though, now I'm finishing closer to on time and had a chance to grab some.

Normally the deal is $5.99 for a mystery bag, which will typically have 18 bagels made that morning and I freeze them and eat them for breakfast with some homemade honey walnut cream cheese. Tariffs or something have bumped it up a buck since last I purchased, but it is what it is.

I had no service at the clinic, so I couldn't see if they were even open with the holiday, but at the end of my shift, I saw I had more than enough time to get there. I debated grabbing 2 bags since I've had a hard time getting there and have been paying full price for lesser bagels from the grocery. Didn't know what flavors I'd get, I don't like all of them, so I opted for a single. That's still like 3 weeks of breakfast and I just have a small freezer.

Got there a half hour before pickup but was hungry from work, so I thought I'd grab a bite to eat, but I saw they were closing right then! Didn't score a breakfast sando like I had wanted, but they gave me the biggest sack I'd ever gotten—thought it was gonna tear through the bottom of the bag!

They offered me another bag, but I didn't know if I had room for all these as it was.

Hopped in the car and hit up the market to grab stuff for the 3 last minute things I got invited to yesterday and today, and snacked on a fresh bagel on the way there. Guess I still got my sandwich, it was just plain instead of pork roll, egg, and cheese.

Got home and sorted out my haul, and I had a grand total of 47 bagels! My cyphering tells me that's less than 15 cents a bagel!

Sorted then evenly into a bunch of ziplocks and hit em with the vacuum sealer to get some of the air out, and I finagled the stuff in the freezer to get them all in there. I'm sitting pretty for quite a while! Not the hugest variety, and none of the seedy ones I like best, but not bad flavors.

I can tell you the app for the discount stuff if anyone wants it. I didn't want to just come out with this and make it look spammy or something. I heard about it on How I Built This with Guy Raz. It's a European company, so not a US only thing. It's kinda hit or miss where I am in the far 'burbs, but if you're in a major city there can be a good variety of businesses hooked up with it. Lemme know.

Hope this was properly dull, I don't follow this community often, but I was proud of this score and felt like sharing it!

Recently moved into a house, and after about two months of having to push the rug behind the basement door out of the way to open it, I finally found my circ saw and took a quarter inch off it.

We caught up on the spring planting. The tomatoes and other veggies went in a week or 2 ago, but the herbs and flowers have sat in pots. Now the 3 lavender, 2 salvia, rosemary, thyme are all in the ground.

While breaking up the beds, my $5 yard sale tiller broke. A bit of locktite was enough to give it another season of use.

My mom died last month, and we've been cleaning out her suite. After an initial cleanup and an estate sale, we're packing the rest up for donation. Today four of us moved most of the furniture out and got almost everything packed.

Tomorrow, we'll hopefully get the rest done before my wife and I start the 3 hour drive home.

Desk chair has been pretty noisy for a while, but since I usualy have headphones on it's not as noticeable.

Well I'm working on a paper due tomorrow and my possible ADHD is real bad right now so I just HAD to fix the squeeking.

It's after 11 PM and I just tightened all the screws and applied WD-40.

No squeek now, very relieved.

edit: If you want to be the 10th person to tell me about static discharge risks, please refrain from doing so. Thread temp removed because it was getting oddly popular for the wrong reasons.

This pain brought to you by wanting to install Bazzite Linux on the HTPC without dealing with spotty feature support. Didn't really need the performance upgrade, just compatibility.

This looks like it's going smooth, but I ended up having to also swap Power Supplies... Radeon 9070 XT needed three 8-pin PCI plugs, but only had 2 plus a single 6 pin. Fuck!

For reference the RTX 3090 (bought on launch before prices went covid batshit) now in the black cardboard box getting prepped for crazy people on EBay buying them for 1000+ used (??? VRAM demand and/or green brand good mindset?) only needed two 8 pin. I'll post EBay listing if people want it, but I'm only selling within Canada. Power hungry SOB. Luckily the bigger old case used to have a rack of hard drives in it (very old reused many times case) so I had a 1500W PSU already and kept all the spare cords thankfully...

Old PC gets the RTX 4070 TI, more appropriate for 1440p anyways vs 2160p living room.

A surprising amount of cat hair, I think I need to brush her more. I just kept pulling balls of felt that had once been cat hair out of the workings of the scroll wheel.

It feels sooo much exactly the same now.

The lock button on my car key fob hasn't been working for ~ 6 months. I was looking at buying a new key fob for between $9 to $35, but something told me to take it apart.

Some isopropyl alcohol, a used toothbrush, and 5 minutes later I discovered some kind of sticky blue goop had infiltrated my key fob. After a quick brush down and slight emersion of the lock button, my key fob is now working again.

1. Relevant commentary on your own dull life. Posts should be about your own dull, lived experience. This is our most important rule. Direct questions, random thoughts, comment baiting, advice seeking, many uses of "discuss" rarely comply with this rule.

2. Original, Fresh, Meaningful Content.

3. Avoid repetitive topics.

4. This is not a search engine
Use a search engine, a tradesperson, Reddit, friends, a specialist Facebook group, apps, Wikipedia, an AI chat, a reverse image search etc. to answer simple questions or identify objects. Also see rule 1, “comment baiting”.

There are a number of content specific communities with subject matter experts who can help you.

Some other communities to consider before posting:

5. Keep it dull. If it puts us to sleep, it’s on the right track. Examples of likely not dull: jokes, gross stuff (including toes), politics, religion, royalty, illness or injury, killing things for fun, or promotional content. Feel free to post these elsewhere.

6. No hate speech, sexism, or bullying No sexism, hate speech, degrading or excessively foul language, or other harmful language. No othering or dehumanizing of anyone or negativity towards any gender identity.

7. Proofread before posting. Use good grammar and punctuation. Avoid useless phrases. Some examples: - starting a post with "So" - starting a post with pointless phrases, like "I hope this is allowed" or “this is my first post” Only share good quality, cropped images. Do not share screenshots of images; share the original image.
