Hello delicious friends!

I am very excited to meet you and introduce myself properly - I go by Greenbeard and have been co-opted as a new moderator of this lovely community, and promise will do my best to help run everything nice and smoothly alongside @quercus@slrpnk.net and @AnarchistArtificer@slrpnk.net

Check out new food help resources on the Wiki!

One of the things we started working on together with Quercus is this List of resources on how to stay fed this winter with the weather what it is and economy going to shit, it is important that everyone knows how to access these resources for their own sake as well as their community. And if these are not of use to you, maybe it would be a cool New Year's thing to get involved with them as a volunteer? This wiki is like a community fridge, take what you need and leave what you can, as you can see it is still very much Work in Progress, so if you have an idea to add to it, definitely do so (you can log into the wiki with the same login and password that you use for SLRPNK.NET) or let us know your ideas in the comments here or in the chat.

Yeah, I said chat!

Did you know that you can come over and hang out with us and talk all things solarfood in our brand new chat? Now you know! Again, you can use the exact same credentials as you use for SLRPNK.NET, how convenient is that?!

Say hi!

Also, say hi in the comments, let us know about all the cool and interesting things that you found out about everything and anything foor and/or solarpunk related, or maybe you have an amazing project/plan/idea to do in 2026? I'd love to hear it!

Friends

Also, show some love to a new community here, !foodnotbombs@slrpnk.net, it is an amazing initiative; I personally was a member of Food Not Bombs collectives in two different cities that I lived, definitely go and give them a look!

BTW, the graphic in this post is "Solarpunk Anarchy" by Sean Bodley at Story Seed Library licensed CC-BY-SA 4.0, definitely go and give him a good look, and some monies if you can!

Summary: This paper will go through the options for Energy Drinks. (Including Pre Workout and Health Conscious Actual Energy drinks)

The Health Conscious Energy Drinks are not precisely incredibly more cheap but gives more for the price. Rather than pure sugar and unhealthy drinks. Please take that into consideration.

Pre Workout can do what Energy Drinks does and better.

Body: In our 21st century. Many people enjoy Energy Drinks. Such as these famous brands. Monster, Redbull, Nos, and ETC..

As we know. These are filled to the brim with sugars. Extremely unhealthy. These are some high causes of things such as Cardiovascular Issues, gastrointestinal issues, kidney Injury, Seizures, Acute Mania and worse. As stated by The National Library of Medicine

Of course there are alternatives. It is important to understand. The cheaper alternative is not completely healthy but from what I have experienced have better compounds to help certain conditions but please understand. This is meant as a scientific example not medical advice. I would though say. If you wish to follow any advice below. Talk with your health provider before hand. (Specifically the cheaper option)

Cheaper Option

C4 Pre Workout

When I was going through some of the most painful parts of my rapid evolution. Such as my sternum rebuilding and Ribs rebuilding. I needed pain medication though never would take pills because I didn’t know what was addicting or not and I believe many of us can agree. Why risk it?

Now I didn’t know C4 Pre Workout Original Fruit Punch. Did work as a pain medication but needed energy and for a long time searching. For something a bunch cheaper. As buying monsters constantly was incredibly expensive.

See here 24 Pack Monster for 60$+

Here is another example 24 pack Redbull (high price 47$$

Middle price 39$ Redbull

Lowest price 36$

These all have minimal benefits, value to add to your health.

And ok wait wtfff look I just found this 12 pack Redbull original for 35$!!!!

But here I will link. The Pre Workout, 60 serving for 50$

Let me ask you, do you already see what I mean? Money wise?

Now as for compounds.

This Pre Workout Contains

CarnoSyn Beta-Alanine

It boost your muscular endurance, lessens muscle fatigue, Boost Performance in High-Intensity exercise and more.

NO3-T Creatine Nitrate

Increased Muscle Pump, Increased Strength and Muscle Mass, Better Performance, Optimized Output and Velocity of Power, and again match last compound Boost in Performance.

Citrulline Malate

Is generally seen as having bigger effects than Nitric Oxide. As Citrulline Malate is Nitric Oxide’s Precursor.

It helps in Improved Blood flow, Better Exercise Performance, Quicker Recovery and Less Fatigue, also has Reproductive Health Benefits, finally has benefits for The Heart and Metabolic System.

Mucuna pruriens

It has effects in Dopamine Supplementation and can reduce symptoms of Parkinson’s, Improves Memory, Concentration, and Learning Ability. It also helps hormonal control and blood circulation which benefits sexual health.

It at many times can help hearing disorders caused by neurological problems. Beyond that lessens stress.

Theacrine

Can boost mental performance after 7 days, stable energy and stimulating ATP production.

This is the cheaper option.

Now The Healthier version, This is not fully cheaper but is an investment towards health compared to Monster

Bloom Energy, 25$ for 12

Best Flavour

Overall just an extremely

Such as patented lychee fruit extract & green tea leaf extract, asian ginseng (panax ginseng) root extract, apple cider vinegar

I’d recommend further research but totally check these out and share these with family and friends. So they can be money conscious and health conscious.

Summary: Kroger, Walmart. Other stores are in my opinion. Scamming the collective. Forgive my personal remark but without stating that. It undermines my whole point.

They sell. Spices at 1-3$ an ounce. Paprika, cayenne pepper and garlic powder. Alongside many others. Things that make our meals. Delicious and Savour! Though. I have found a way. To drastically cut down on the expenditures of this need. Bulk 5lb containers worth 20-35$.

Body: Hello everyone! Last post I went through how to optimize your diet of course the 280 range was for a single person not for a family. As many probably could pickup on. That’s why I did acknowledge the higher price range.

Now I have new finding that I believe will save people massive money.

From my calculations about 144-240 dollars USD. For 5 lbs

Please calculate for other countries. Will vary.

This is because a lb is 16 oz.

This is because they sell most high quality spices. As I would say. The best to Optimize your intake. At 1-3$ per oz.

As you see in these examples.

While you may ask yourself, as we all do. Why do we need a 5lb container. Simple answer, Why not? Would you rather risk having your money siphoned like a pig at work or get high quality, organic and non additive products for a fraction of the price and even that is an understatement!

Collectively for all three types of spices. That is 432 to 720$! Imagine the hassle! This is a fundamental manipulation and taking advantage of those without this knowledge. A fraud and money grab!

Instead Amazon. Has the same amount of spice for only 85! Wouldn’t you say. You see now exactly what I mean!

I will link these spices below. Please consider what I am saying! Do not let greedy companies. Take so much money for what should be a fundamental part of everyone’s culture spices!!

Fresh Finest Bulk 5 LB Premium Garlic Powder - Kosher Certified Non-GMO Ground Garlic Spice Best for Vegetables, Meats, Rubs and Dressings, 5 LB

Fresh Finest Sweet Paprika Bulk 5 LB - Premium Ground Seasoning, Freshly Packed at the Source, Perfect for Soups, Meat Rubs, Sauces, and More - Ideal for Home & Commercial Cooking!

Prima Spice Hot Cayenne Pepper Powder Bulk 5 LBS-60,000 SHU Heat Unit-Gluten Free All Natrual Red Ground Pepper-For Commercial & Home Use

Now use them without restrain! Devour Tasteful and Delicious Meats and Foods! Optimize your diet with such knowledge!

Summary: This paper will go through how I changed my diet from High Sugar and Carbohydrate to maximize Protein and Calories for Growth to Eating Majorly Less Sugar and Carbohydrates but getting more Healthy Nutrition. Such as incredibly Healthy Fats, Ketones and Proteins. Though I must say anyone who follows this example you’d have to supplement nutritional intake.

Clarification: I will give a very detailed background as my scientific nature makes me give all information and expect others no nothing of my background. I don’t expect everyone to not know certain things but I also can’t know. So please forgive me if it comes off as oversharing. My Hybrid Explanations are to make sense of how I managed my early diet and why my new diet also benefits me so much more. Though this also connects to early human and proto humans desires. Which everyone has but most very dormant.

Body: Before this month began. I went to the store. I noticed. They had premade Angus Patties. Now for months nearly a year before. I was only able to eat. Ego Waffles, 8-12 oz of peanut butter on all 4 and syrup. This for most people is extremely unhealthy. Got around 7-10k calories per day. 300+ g of sugar and 600-800 g of carbohydrates.

For most people unless you can modify your body. Like me. DO NOT TRY THIS MEAL

For the reason this worked for me. I engineered my body to have a Parrot Hybrid. So my Hemoglobin AC1 was still 5.3%. This is due to my abnormal engineered Biology. Again DO NOT TRY.

Now my new diet. I started eating those Angus Patties and my body instantly and rapidly switched. Most of you would not have the same instincts as me or nearly as heavy. Though I got this absolute early human instincts and desires.

Such as a deep desire, annoyance and craving for more meat. Now how I managed to save the most money.

I went back to The Store and got Simply Truth, 85% lean grass fed ground beef. 3 pack each 1lb. Clarifications : You can get lower quality meat but I’d recommend focusing on high quality beef.

Meat. It’s controls dopamine & norepinephrine, gives tryptophan & B-vitamins which regulate serotonin and melatonin. And it spikes Testosterone and IGF-1.

From what I understand. This also effects Ketones which take this with a grain of salt because I’m not 100%. Though this meal will give high quality and Clean Ketones for healing of wounds. Which will produce a slight sweet smell but it’s unlikely you’d smell it as I did. Which was a very floral smell because I can smell even periods before they happen.

Next. It’s important to consider. How else you can optimize these meal

Optimization of Meal

For keeping it Cheap I recommend basic 1$-2$ buns pack of 4 but you can also get the 12 packs for 3$. Just focus on the cheapest most basic ones you can get. UNLESS you have money for 4-6$ buns. Which could be healthier.

Then I get spices such as paprika, cayenne pepper and garlic powder. All from Simply truth. They can be trusted decently well. With things such as additives and more. In my opinion.

Then for cheese because who doesn’t want cheese lol. I recommend if you can afford it. Private selection jalapeño cheese. It’s cut into small rectangles. Though for affordability. Just get a big bag of cheap stuff. It doesn’t alter much besides The Private selection cheese I suggested. You can know it’s high quality enough for rich fuckers :) while still be decently cheap.

Then to add fats and calories. I soak the patties in Private selection New Zealand Grass Fed Butter.

Understand. This will cost around 280-400$ (including supplements and 30 lbs of meat per month) per month. So it is an investment but cheap for the health of your body. Maximizing your investment.

You could also make a different meal with some fruits and vegetables but that would likely cost somewhat more.

Understand how well this affects my body. Is also partially due to engineered biology (realistic Wolf and Vampire Hybrid) and training. Though this is something that can benefit all whether or not they have the same biology. It’s a diet closely connecting us to what our ancestors would want to eat constantly if they could.

So far I tried making a flour based coating and frying it and I’ve tried frying it for 5 mins before putting it in the oven. Neither option was successful.

not sure what the cutoff point is between cheap/healthy food and healthy food so I'm just gonna go for it. made this for lunch today and it was tasty so I thought I'd share.

Tzatziki dressing

  • 1 cup greek style yogurt (sour cream would probably work as well)
  • 1/2 cucumber, peeled and then shredded
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tbsp dried dill weed
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp sour (I used vinegar, but I think lemon juice is traditional)
  • oat milk to thin it down into a dressing consistency
  • salt to taste

mix it all together & add however much oat milk you'd like to get it thinned down to be a salad dressing

Falafel

  • 1 cup dried chickpeas, soaked for 12 hours, drained
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • 1 tbsp baharat spice blend
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • a generous pinch of salt

preheat oven to 390 F. grind it all up in a food processor until the chickpeas and onion are chopped very fine, like large grains of sand. form into balls/patties/lumps (I used my hands, so they're sort of oval shaped), bake for 17 minutes.

plate with whatever your favorite greens are (I used romaine hearts), chopped tomatoes (for color), a few falafel, drizzle with the tzatziki sauce & sprinkle a pinch of dill over top.

Punch up cheap salsa; Use it creatively with what you have on hand; Boost what's good; Pizza fingers, chips, tacos

I hate cooking. And what is more, I hate cleaning up after cooking. Pizza was my go to. I would buy pre made dough and whatever toppings suited my fancy, it was cheap and delicious and only needed one pan. But it made me gain weight.

So I'm looking for a healthier alternative. Something I can cheaply and easily make, that tastes good, and only uses one dish.

Almonds tend to be one of mine in a pinch, a good fresh apple too, but I'd love to know some more, particularly in terms of meals.

DIY Bread (lemmy.world)

Just another no-rush recipe, though this can be done in as little as 3 hours.

  • 3 cups flour (bread flour preferred, but just unbleached white will do in a pinch)

  • 2 tsp active dry yeast

  • 2 tsp salt

  • 1 tbsp brown sugar

  • 1 1/2 cups warm water

mix all dry ingredients together & then add water bit by bit until the dough comes together. toss it in an oiled bowl and cover (I use plastic wrap) for 2 hours.

bake immediately, at 400 F for 35 minutes and then rest for 15 minutes

OR

put it in the fridge for up to 48 hours - this will age the dough and the slow fermentation develops all sorts of nice flavors. let it rest on the counter for 2 hours prior to baking.

occasionally I'll use my cast iron dutch oven to bake - pre-heat the dutch oven for 30 minutes at 450 F, put the dough on parchment paper and then put that in the dutch oven, cover with lid & bake for 30 minutes. remove lid & keep baking for 10 minutes.

allow to rest for 15 - 20 minutes before chopping it up.

DIY Hummus (lemmy.world)

just something I like to make occasionally, usually on the weekend when I'm not in a hurry

  • 2 cups dried chickpeas, soaked for a minimum of 6 hours

  • 1/2 cup olive oil (doesnt have to be expensive though it should be noted that higher quality olive oil will taste better - I use a Spanish oil blend when I make hummus)

  • 1/3 cup tahini (I prefer a toasted/roasted tahini, raw tahini has a meh sort of flavor)

  • 2 tbsp garlic powder

  • 1 tbsp onion powder

  • 1 tbsp shawarma powder

  • salt to taste (use a good quality salt, not iodized table salt - I prefer Maldon sea salt flakes)

  • 1 tbsp roasted sesame oil

add sesame oil to the pressure cooker, add chickpeas, and just enough water to cover. pressure cook the chickpeas for 18 minutes at pressure, remove from heat & wait 10 minutes, then manually release any pressure & drain.

  • I use a Hawkins 3L stovetop pressure cooker, if you're using an instapot then maybe look up instructions for it

blend (or use a food processor) chickpeas, tahini, spices. slowly drizzle oil in over 1 to 2 minutes. it really depends on how oily you like your hummus.

keeps for a few days in the fridge, generally doesnt last that long for me, i usually eat it up quick. tasty w/ DIY naan.

Sourdough starter? (lemmy.world)
submitted 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) by Raindrop@lemmy.world to c/cheaphealthyfood@lemmy.world

I make all our bread from scratch - regular loaves, rolls, buns, pitas, tortillas, dough, etc.

I really want to try sourdough, but I have no idea where to get it. I have two friends with starters, but they live across the country. Do I just go to a bakery and buy it? It feels like a secret society lol.

Please help with my entrance into the secret sourdough society!

Rice and vegetables (lemmy.world)

If I'm in a hurry/tired/drained and don't want to put much mental effort into making food, I make rice, steam some veggies, and add a sauce.

We get big, inexpensive bags of frozen veggies with broccoli, cauliflower, and carrots. I steam them for a few minutes while the rice cooks. Then I whip up a sauce, usually some kind of Thai-inspired spicy peanut butter sauce.

If there's leftover rice, I let it hang out in the fridge for a couple days, and then use it to make fried rice, which is basically the same as above, but all fried together and possibly with different flavors :)

BEANS (lemmy.world)
submitted 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) by Raindrop@lemmy.world to c/cheaphealthyfood@lemmy.world

My current favorite bean situation (a recipe from a friend):

  • 2 cans* of beans (usually black)
  • 1-2 tablespoons minced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon oregano
  • 1/2 onion, diced (yellow or white)
  • Salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, to taste
  • Drain and rinse beans (if from a can).
  • Put them in a medium-sized pot.
  • Fill pot with water just until beans are covered.
  • Add all ingredients and stir.
  • Bring to a boil with the lid on.
  • Turn down to low to simmer for 30 minutes.
  • Take off lid, stir, and finish cooking until you have your desired consistency (we like it a little mushy).

*I haven't been able to figure this out texture-wise with our dried black beans, even after soaking and cooking for a long time, so I'll have to work on that a bit. But beans in cans work really well!

What are your favorite ways to make beans?

Potatoes! (lemmy.world)

Potatoes are so versatile. Boil 'em, mash 'em, stick 'em in a stew, and more yet. We buy a 50lb bag of potatoes from the Costco Business Center and have fun learning new ways to eat them.

It's definitely possible to make potatoes unhealthy, but you can fix them up with your own ingredients and techniques to keep an eye on nutrition.

My current favorite thing to do: Bake 3 or 4 russets, ideally until just before they're baked-potato-mushy. Dice them up in to nickel-sized pieces. Gently toss with a little oil and seasoning. Air-fry them at 400 F until crispy.

Then you can add them to burritos, have them with eggs, or just with some roasted veggies.

What are your favorite cheap ways to eat potatoes?
