When it comes to Israel’s handling of the war on Gaza, Democrats are nearly united. Only 8 percent of party members support Israel’s military actions, according to a Gallup poll from last month.

A vote at the Democratic National Committee meeting later this month could once again expose the yawning rift between the party’s base and its leaders, who are lining up to oppose a resolution against arms for Israel.

Allison Minnerly, the 26-year-old committee member sponsoring the measure, told The Intercept Thursday that Democratic leaders risk further alienating party members — especially young voters — if they kill the symbolic resolution.

“Our voters, our base, they are saying that they do not want U.S. dollars to enable further death and starvation anywhere across the world, particularly in Gaza,” said Minnerly, a first-term DNC member from Florida. “I don’t think it should be a hard decision for us to say that clearly.”

In the clip published by Ben Gvir on X, the minister and two other individuals, including a prison guard, surround Marwan Barghouti in a corner of his cell.

“You will not defeat us. Whoever harms the people of Israel, whoever kills children, whoever kills women … we will erase them,” #BenGvir says in Hebrew.

Barghouti tries to respond but is interrupted by Ben Gvir, who says: “No, you know this. And it’s been the case throughout history.”

She called for an embargo on all arms sales to #Israel and a cessation of trade agreements – as well as accountability for the war crimes and crimes against humanity with which the international criminal court has charged top #Israeli officials. She also called for a complete Israeli withdrawal from occupied territory by the 17 September deadline set by the #UN general assembly.

“Ending the question of #Palestine in line with international law is possible and necessary: end the genocide today, end the permanent occupation this year, and end apartheid,” she said.

“I read and translate testimonies of people who walk 7 kilometers each way in order lug a sack of flour weighing 30 kilos in this horrific heat. How can we even imagine that? The extreme heat is also playing a part.

“It’s terribly frightening because every time, you feel as if you’ve crossed another threshold from which it’s already impossible to return. For example, the erasure of #Gaza — there is no way back from that. What that means is, that even if the last soldier returns to Israel today and the Gaza Strip is opened to the world, we’re in a situation in which there is no way to exist in Gaza.”

Yes, it always was, but the fact that staunch Zionists acknowledge it now is another step forward in public opinion, and will make it politically more difficult to attack the Palestinian solidarity movement.

Right here. Biden's policies greatly strengthened Israel and directly helped the genocide.

Is Trump worse? I think yes. But that is still no reason to gloat or to think that endlessly supporting the lesser evil is going to produce any real changes that the world needs.

[-] [email protected] 22 points 7 months ago

Yes, and it is very positive that prominent human rights groups agree and document it. These reports can be used to pressure governments, universities, etc. to divest from Israel and to stop sending arms, software, etc. to Israel.

But what about Hamas? /s

Aren't the elections over? Whatever "strategic" excuse for supporting Biden/Harris is gone now. It's a bi-partisan policy of unconditional support for Israel.

It's true Trump will be more extreme, but there is no longer any excuse for going easy on Biden/Harris, if there ever was.

This article cites another article from The Forward, a mainstream US Jewish publication that had information that countered the Israeli government narrative.

You mean the reaction (downvotes) in the .world instances, right?

I think the contrast reflects the real diversity of opinions, and not lack of stamina. Of course I am disappointed with the downvotes and the hostile comments to anything that might oppose Harris. But the level of discourse in Lemmy is a lot better than Twitter, FB, etc.

So I'm going to keep posting these to as many communities as I can. :-)
