We both know it wasn't even Che Guevara T-Shirt socialism. It was definitely "I think the nordic model is pretty cool" socialism.

the only viable left leaning political party in the US?

I might be misunderstanding you, so I apologize if that is the case, but if you are referring to the Democrats they are far from left leaning. They aren't even center leaning.

You can't even say they have a better track record than the Republicans. They bomb countries as much (or in recent years even more) than the Republicans. They advocate for wars. They fund ICE even more than the Republicans. They stand up just as much for reproductive rights (read: not at all). They just do all of it while waving a rainbow flag.

I really hope you meant the Greens or the CPUSA; which have their own issues but are certainly more left than either the Democrats or Republicans.

Living in Japan, this almost didn't register to me. I have literally never met anybody that didn't have one. When you move out, you use your family's old one until you can buy a newer one.

Everyone should have one, absolutely.

The South's current government is ridiculously conservative. Rolling back labour laws and women's rights were pillars of their election run. They'll do whatever the US tells them to. It shouldn't come as a surprise that peaceful diplomacy is not at the forefront of their mind.

It's honestly pretty cyclical, they bounce back and forth between more diplomatic minded leadership and more warhungry. They are much more in the antagonistic phase of their cycle right now.

As somebody who vaped for a long time, I kind of disagree with this one. Of every method for quitting smoking, vaping was the easiest and most effective. It let me titrate down to eventually 0 nicotine juice, which let me stop altogether. I only very rarely vape anymore, I keep my mod around in case I am ever out drinking and get an urge, but it is definitely the reason I was able to quit smoking.

The popcorn lung thing is kind of an urban legend, there is no case of any vaper ever getting it from vaping, but diacetyl (the additive in question) has been discontinued in basically all juice just in case anyway.

The usual mantra in vaping communities was always to tell people that if you weren't a smoker already, don't start vaping. Is it better than smoking? Almost assuredly, but it's still not going to be better than just breathing cleaning air. The recommendation was always as a transition away from smoking. It's one of the few hobbies we would congratulate each other over leaving.

If you don't vape or smoke already, don't start though.

People on lemmy.ml thinking we just really enjoy Mali.

It's actually been super refreshing to, generally, be able to say I am a Marxist-Leninist and not immediately get downvoted into oblivion. There are still some of the kneejerk reactions to the CPC, but even then people seem more willing to engage on good-faith even with disagreements.

Most social media.

I used to use reddit, I have moved all my presence over here. That's about it.
I have a FB Messenger account because that is how a lot of my family keeps in touch with me, and I have this. I had a proper FB account back when I was in uni and Facebook was still only for uni students, but I think I dropped it shortly after that.

It's not some grand principled stance, I just don't get most of them because I am apparently an old man. Like Instagram, why do I want to share pictures with just random people? How am I networking with anybody by doing so? I honestly don't get why it is so popular.

Mods went basically hands off, the only things they would moderate are things that broke site-wide rules like child pornography. Anything else at all was fair game. It was a pretty good view of what unmoderated reddit would look like.

After the usual threats, mods didn't budge so were removed by admins I believe. Last I heard the place was still an unmoderated glorious trash fire.

I remember a sub did that, I think they had a 12 hour approval window. I forget which one, but I think reddit already came down on them.

FInding willing scabs wouldn't be hard, finding willing competent ones would be.

Small niche subs would probably be fine, but any of the big megasubs would be a trashfire. It's why I wish every sub did what Interestingasfuck did. They showed exactly what the sub would look like unmoderated and stuck to it.

They're probably right, depressingly.

I can't make anyone else leave, but I did what I could by leaving personally. I am generally enjoying the experience over here more anyway, so I am not missing a whole lot. Maybe a couple niche subs, but I was considering working on launching equivalent communities over here.

Their tools are just not up to keep track of all these things.

If only someone developed some third-party tools that could better help them with their job...
