You get a bit of a dose of cosmic radiation while flying. It won't turn your baby into the Thing or give them the ability to catch on fire or turn invisible, but it could still damage the baby at a vital stage of their development.

I think the problem here is that being a scientist means you are, by definition, "smart". Which can make it hard to accept when you are being an idiot. And what do people do when they can't accept a truth about themselves?

I actually already have the Alphasmart Neo. I just have baggage about taking it outside to write since I was given it when I was in 5th grade, so my bad self talk likes to remind me that "this is a device for children to do their English assignments on" whenever I take it out as an adult

So, Ive recently gotten back into writing and been thinking about how much more fun it would be to write Outside. Problem is, the sun hates screens. I have an Alphawrite Neo, of course, but I've always been insecure about lugging a weird educational device around with me in public. So I started looking into Eink tablets that could be used with a keyboard and

Jesus H. Christ, that price tag!

I just want something to type on something. Apparently thats strange, so maybe there will be something cheaper as just a word processor. It seems that the only reasonable offering here is the Freewrite Traveler, though, so I look it up and

WHY‽ It's the same price!

Okay, maybe I could just get a Raspberry Pi 400 and attach an eInk monitor to it. Apparently, this is not the usual use-case for E-ink, but there are in fact e-ink monitors out there! Most were around a thousand dollars for some reason, but here is the cheapest one I could find:

That's around the price point of a Boox Go, for reference, which has a really slow screen refresh rate.

Why is there no affordable e-paper products that arent a pain to use? I am aware of cheaper ones, but the ones ive seen reviews if aren't able to keep up with typing in a way that seems responsive. And I'm aware that you can find eink displays (as in the component) for as low as $30, so they should be able to be cheaper than this!

Speaking as someone who lifeguarded for a big chunk of my adult life, you start tuning out the skimpy outfits real fast. If you think you can get with one of the hot lifeguards by just existing and being hot, you're as delusional as I was back when I tried to ask out a McDonald's cashier through the drive-thru.

But you could look nice literally anywhere else. The pool is almost precision-engineered to ruin your hair and your clothes and your makeup. Its almost like it was designed to be anti-fashion. Why here, of all places?

But its a swimsuit! That's like making a Display Hammer that looks just like an actual hammer but is just there for the ✨️Hammer Aesthetic✨️ and would break if used to hammer anything. Whats even the point?

Look, russia and the USSR has consistently been led by people who have even less of an idea of what the situation is on the ground than even US politicians. In the US, thats becuase they are bourgeois and live in a world where the banks print money for you. In the USSR, it was because the founders were ideologues who would ignore reality if it didnt march to the tune of their political beliefs and this set the tone for the organization, at least up until they got Gorbachev who was actually sane but was handed a losing hand. In Russia, its because Putin is surrounded by a bunch of bobbleheads who each in turn are surrounded by their own bobbleheads who also have their own posse of bobbleheads as well, and on top of this these bobbleheads are bourgeois who live in a world where the banks print money for you. I have absolutely no idea what motivates the leaders of modern Russia, but i know its not anything that would make sense in the real world or even in the world the bourgeois live in, and I think this mismatch is causing all their issues with the West.

Okay, the titles bugging me. Why would you go to a pool wearing a swimsuit if you don't want to get the swimsuit wet? Smh

[-] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago

Yep! That's the entire appeal of the system! And I want to make absolutely sure that anyone picking up the game knows that they are getting into, because I am well aware that the fact this is my favorite game system says a lot about me as a person

I just wanted to make sure you understood that the complexity is loaded all at the front, during session 0. Its actually a good deal more complex, but you get to pick and choose what kinds of complexity you want and deal with it at character creation.

Also, their supplemental books really helped me grow as a writer and gamemaster. Most of them tackle a genre and explore it thoroughly.

I'm going to second the other commenter in my enthusiasm for GURPS, but for the opposite reason.

Gurps has the problem of being a universal role-playing system, like Fate, which means session zero includes a long sit-down with your DM about what precisely we will be doing in this game and what mechanics we will be using to create the desired experience. You then fill out the appropriate forms in triplicate to create your character. Usually, your DM makes a template for you to use like a shopping list, but the rulebook assumes you are digging through the first 300-page volume selecting your abilities and skills over the course of a day.

Then, once you start playing, you never have to look at the rulebook again. All the rules you will be using were written (by you) on your character sheet. You roll the dice, see if you managed to roll under your target numbers, and then either succeed or fail. The DM barely has to adjudicate anything.

My fiancée asked me to do an easy, mindless task of downloading all the CC for her sims. I tried to explain this to her, and she didnt believe me until she saw that an hour of it reduced me to tears

My favorite pastime is telling people all about skinny pigs.

@guineapigs

"Here's a picture of a scrotum with a mustache. He will never know what warmth feels like. If you want him, you're going to have to pick between his happiness and safety. If you want him to be happy and get him a friend to live with, when they argue his friend will bite him in the rump, and he's going to be constantly sick. If you want him to be safe, just get him, but he might actually die of loneliness."

Back in high school when I was able to use my parent's insurance, I was on Strattera. But the generic version is, like, six times more expensive than Ritalin, so I'm thinking about trying something new.

I'm looking for a toy for my little cousin's birthday, and I don't know what the term is for the genre I am looking for

I saw a review for a set of what the reviewer called "unboxing toys", in which the process of opening the package to get to the toy is turned into a whole experience. The main focus of the video was a criticism of Beast Labs by comparing it to similar more fun products at lower price points. This genre of toy seemed really fun, like an escape room in a box. One that captured my attention was the Treasure X Dragons Realm Treasure Chest in which the kid must

  1. unlock the chest with the skeleton key
  2. excavate the three secret artifacts of power, discover the dragon armor, and find the three dragon riders
  3. slot the artifacts into the treasure map
  4. activate the secret switch in the eyesocket of the skull
  5. unlock the secret compartment
  6. unchain the dragon!

Obviously this could make for an epic experience, and I want to find more toys like this. Google says the word for this genre of toys is "surprise toys" but whenever I try to use that as a keyword I only find boring lootbox bullshit like LOL Suprise dolls and kinder eggs. How do I find more toys like these, which are more about crafting a little experience with a thematic puzzle?

Edit: Forgot to include a piece of important context. My little cousin is turning 3 on his next birthday and likes "dinotaurs" and "dagons" because they roar and smash things and eat his cars and trains. This gift is more for his dad than him, since the little cutie will need to be guided through the puzzle which will a good opportunity for quality time.

How to buff investigation (lemmy.dbzer0.com)

This is a continuation of my previous post, in spirit. I've been hammering out some rules for a skill-based dungeon-crawling game with five classes, one of which is the Ranger which is meant to be the overland travel specialist. That's a pretty narrow niche, so I've been trying to flesh them out by making them really, really good at mysteries. Here's what I've come up with so far:

  • If you are feeling stumped, you can privately ask the DM for help
  • If you are exercising judgement on par with the average koala, the DM can warn you before your character does something uncharacteristically idiotic.
  • If you are looking for clues, you don't have to roll a skill check to find it as long as you are using an appropriate skill in an appropriate manner.

Basically, Rangers get to operate as if they were using the Gumshoe system, plus the Common Sense feat from GURPS. There's also some more traditional Ranger stuff that I've come up with:

  • You can make an effective ghillie suit in under an hour, and can use Naturalism (the primary ranger skill) to hide using it while in your favored terrain.
  • You can speak with your favored quarry (a mundane animal; you can pick multiple of these if you are fine with dumping all your levels in getting really good at hunting and taming). They likely have different senses and priorities than you and may be helpful in giving you a different perspective, although most will be very food-motivated and dim-witted.

Not sure what to do other than this. Do any of you have other ways I could make give Rangers little buffs to their ability to play as an Aragorn-Batman hybrid?
