Trump on social media said the ship was warned by a U.S. Navy guided missile destroyer in the Gulf of Oman to stop, but it did not. He said the Navy "stopped them right in their tracks by blowing a hole in the engineroom" and that U.S. marines had custody of the vessel, named Touska, and were "seeing what's on board!"

So it’s piracy now?

“They’re treating people like animals. Alligator Alcatraz is like (Nazi) Germany in 1939, updated with 2026 rules,” Dixon said in one of half a dozen phone calls he made to CTV News.

When he arrived at Alligator Alcatraz, Dixon says he and the other detainees were searched while handcuffed and shackled, then ordered to remove their clothes. They were given one set of underwear, a pair of flip flops and an orange jumpsuit.

Detainees were fingerprinted and assigned colour-coded bracelets. His bracelet was yellow, which meant he would get a hearing and stood a chance of not being deported.

He was then locked in a communal cell behind metal fencing that housed 16 bunkbeds for 32 men. What Dixon calls a “cage” had two urinals on the edge of the cell and a toilet in the centre. He says the smell of urine permeated the entire space and that the guards could see into the toilets.

...

“There was not one dangerous person in there,” he said. “These people all have families. Everyone is pulling for everyone else. They were working and were in there for nonsense reasons.”

Dixon said the men in his pod were arrested because they “didn’t have complete paperwork or did not renew their [driver’s] licences,” and were rounded up by ICE at the licence bureau.

...

Detainees were given three meals a day: Breakfast would consist of canned fruit and toast or oatmeal; lunch was often a bologna sandwich, while shredded chicken or ground beef with peas and carrots would be served for dinner.

Dixon says he was allowed to shower three days after he arrived and was given one hour of yard time every four days. He says he longed to see the blue sky, but all he saw was the white plastic tarp that covered the astroturf yard.

The Canadian man says he was unable to sleep while at Alligator Alcatraz because of the noise and disruption. While the showers were scalding hot, Dixon says the facility was freezing cold. The high-powered generators required to cool the facility were loud. And during the overnight shifts, guards would turn the lights on every four hours to do a head count in the cells.

...

Dixon’s wife, Jo Ann Collison, says she’s worried about her husband’s anxiety.

“His mind is deteriorating. He’s terrified of flying. He hasn’t flown anywhere,” said Collison, tearing up during a Zoom interview. “He won’t be able to see his grandkids and that will be very hard.”

Collison says she needs to pack up their life in Florida before she returns to Montreal to be with her husband.

“I can’t go with him now. What if for some reason ICE doesn’t let me back in?”

After 65 days in detention, Dixon will board an American Airlines flight to Toronto on Wednesday. After 21 years of living in the United States, he will be barred from returning.

If “antifa” is mentioned in the context of “references to historical or recent incidents of violence” — a category so sprawling that it includes “historic wars” and “battles” — that post will also be penalized. Should Meta apply this rule as written, the company could, for instance, restrict posts comparing the antifascist nature of World War II to the contemporary antifa movement.

Potential penalties for violating Community Standards range from a full account ban to comments being hidden or suppressed.

The policy change follows years of Meta and its chief executive Mark Zuckerberg’s pivot of political convenience toward President Donald Trump and his base. Following Trump’s second electoral victory, Meta quickly changed its speech rules to allow for anti-transgender slurs and dehumanization of immigrants, The Intercept previously reported, aligning the company with longtime MAGA culture war grievances.

Amazon is applying a fuel surcharge to fulfillment fees for sellers in Canada and the U.S., a spokesperson for the e-commerce giant confirmed to CBC News on Thursday.

The 3.5 per cent surcharge will first apply to those using the Fulfillment by Amazon program, through which sellers can outsource packing and shipping to the company's fulfillment warehouses. This surcharge, meant for those with an online Amazon storefront operating in the United States and Canada, will be imposed beginning on April 17.

Sellers who use the company's Multi-Channel Fulfillment program — which can be used by those who have a non-Amazon sales channel, like a personal website — will see a surcharge starting on May 2.

“Elevated costs in fuel and logistics have increased the cost of operating across the industry," the spokesperson said in a statement, saying the company has "absorbed these increases" so far.

"But similar to other major carriers, when costs remain elevated we implement temporary surcharges to partially recover these costs," the spokesperson wrote. "We remain committed to our selling partners’ success and to maintaining broad selection and low prices for customers.”

A number of major companies who offer consumer services have added fuel surcharges to their base rate in the weeks since the beginning of a global energy crisis that began with the U.S. and Israel's attack on Iran.

The selling stuff is a loss leader thing for Amazon they make their money off of AWS.

As required by rules I clearly state that I'm affiliated with the site. It's a new project: Concept-proof site about advertising with European tools that is run and promote with European tools only. It's very fresh and right now it's only available in Polish, but I hope we will get there with enough support.

Linked article is specifically why it's not only immoral but also dangerous to rally on US advertising tools.

If it's not suitable, or nor useful feel free to nuke this post. I hope it's ok.

I stopped using the Google for everything (minus youtube) years ago. I had moved to Ecosia, I believe it is a US based charity (edit I was corrected it is a European non profit) project to plant trees in the desert and stuff. I know it took search things from, I wanna say; Google, Bing, and maybe Yahoo to get search results (will be trying to move to the EU search engine some time). I am sure the ads, that my pihole setup could not block, they show where from Google (edit Yahoo and Google) but it is not like I intentionally clicked them.

I got onto the self hosting train fairly hard because of the BoycottUS movement and I finally got searXNG working and set up as my default search engine on my iPad. Sure it is pulling results from US search engines but I am not paying for them (via my eyeballs on ads) and it is another US service I get to remove from the list of things to boycott!

There is a pretty big movement in Denmark that tried to avoid US products and companies based in Denmark. I assume this is why they have launched a massive campaign where they use local sayings in a humorous way.

You can read more and see more examples here:

Are there any other similar attempts where you are, where they or other US companies try to regain market share?
