Israel levelled multiple multi storey apartment buildings in Beirut, Lebanon last night/early this morning, and the scenes are apocalyptic. No evacuation order was given for this bombing, many were sleeping in the early hours of the morning when the buildings that they were sleeping in were destroyed. Hundreds of probable casualties.

A long read for an article or blog post, but well worth it. If you or anyone you know suffers from a chronic illness, ailment or pain, you might relate to some of what is written here. I certainly did, and can share the author's dislike of positivity and therapy culture.

Watching the debate just ended up reinforcing my belief that Kamala Harris has serious issues with her rhetoric on non white/POC men. Literally everytime she brought them up implicitly in the debate, she associated them with making and selling fentanyl and other drugs, brought up the fake Hamas sexual assault myths, and bragged about her job locking these people up and working on the border. Just despicable.

It's not the debunked claims. As someone that did compete in sports in high school (albeit poorly), the story does check out. Sports organisations are underfunded and end up becoming circular/annulation like organisations in which athletes parents, loved ones, family, etc get involved and take up senior positions. I've seen it happen before.

Even outside of my personal experiences, the stories about athletes having one of their parents as a head coach are pretty infamous, or just famous, depending on how good the athlete is. I don't think anyone cares that Armand Duplantis' coach is his dad for example, he's the world record holder. However, you could argue that when this happens in more "subjective" sports, that there is a high potential for cheating, especially in organisational positions outside of coaching. There's a strong argument there.

All this is common knowledge amongst anyone that's competed in higher level sports. Also the end of this video is hilarious and dripping in irony.

spoiler the end of the videoThe end of the video is basically an advertisement for Conte's new doping regiment he primarily uses with boxers, while he very unconvincingly fakes repentance and being an anti doping advocate

The left should not support the transphobic, TERF ideology, gender essentialist, racist self hating 4B movement. That movement "feminism as neocolonialism" personified.

warning: murder, SV, racismTheir forums have celebrated killing innocent men as well as sexually harrassing men, celebrated the sexual assault and rape of boys, and encourages having sexual relations with colonialist US troops, along with perpetuating racist tropes about Korean men. They are also extremely transphobic and homophobic. This movement will not lead to women's liberation.

It's because the bourgeoise is shutting the door and kicking down the ladder behind them. The student protests will be drawn along class lines. The majority of students protesting in support of Palestine will be those on grants, bursaries and scholarships. So normal people good at academics or sports. The majority of those on the Zionist side will be the rich fail children there because of money, family connections, or both. By cracking down hard on the protests, the bourgeoise are saying that class mobility is dead, unless you fully assimilate to their moral values. In essence, that's the message here. Class mobility is dead, there will be no way to improve your position without fully selling out, and we are going towards a pseudo caste/feudal system.

Context. The commenters getting upvoted are defending this racist meme by local social media personality and racist idiot "The Kiffness".

The commenter that got 270 downvotes is the one calling out the racism.

Yes, many people in South Africa are still so racist that they do the fried chicken stereotype thing and insinuate that this is a tactic that black majority political parties use to "buy votes".

US makes failed bid for Iran to allow 'symbolic strike' by Israel - The Cradle - 16 April 2024

Washington used diplomatic backchannels to ask Tehran not to retaliate to an Israeli strike, which would allow Tel Aviv to 'save face' following the massive retaliatory attack launched by Iran

“Iran has received messages from mediators to let the regime do a symbolic strike to save face and asked Iran not to retaliate,” the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed to The Cradle.

He added that Tehran “outright rejected” the proposal, delivered by mediators, and reiterated warnings that any Israeli attack on Iranian soil would be met with a decisive and immediate response.

“Iran successfully embarrassed all of the integrated radar network and anti-missile systems of the US and the [Israeli] regime. The US even activated its parked satellites over the region to do maximum protection and failed miserably,” the Iranian military official added.

Does it get any more embarrassing for the US? They are constantly begging Iran and its allies to stop, and keep getting told no.

As someone that always got the creeps from this guy and got tired of seeing him all over social media promoting his nonsense with his whole "I'm a professor at Stanford" act, this article is cathartic and somewhat vindicating to read.

The long and the short of it is that while preaching self control, cutting out toxicity from your life, and creating peace, he proceeded to have affairs with five or six different women at the same time, with unprotected sex and potential spreading of STDs/STIs, along with cheating on the woman he was trying to have a child with, as well as ghosting pretty much everyone in his life constantly. He also made up a dubious backstory to hide the nepotism that allowed him to have a career at Stanford:

What does seem certain is that in his adolescence, Andrew became a regular consumer of talk therapy. In therapy, one learns to tell stories about one’s experience. A story one could tell is: I overcame immense odds to be where I am. Another is: The son of a Stanford professor, born at Stanford Hospital, grows up to be a Stanford professor.

For context with this paragraph, Huberman talks about the benefits of therapy all the time:

Andrew’s relationship to therapy remains intriguing. “We were at dinner once,” says Eve, “and he told me something personal, and I suggested he talk to his therapist. He laughed it off like that wasn’t ever going to happen, so I asked him if he lied to his therapist. He told me he did all the time.”

As a summary for how his podcast is filled with projection:

With repeated listening to the podcast, one discerns a man undergoing, in public, an effort to understand himself. There are hours of talking about addiction, trauma, dopamine, and fear. Narcissism comes up consistently. One can see attempts to understand and also places where those attempts swerve into self-indulgence.

Can't believe this song is almost 16 years old, the lyrics are just heartbreaking in modern context, especially this part:

And Mary and David smoke dung in the trenches
While Zion's behavior never gets mentioned
The writings, on your wall
And the blood on the cradle
And the ashes you wade through
Got you calling God's name in vain
Leaved the damned to damn it all

It's only gotten 100 times worse since the 2008 Gaza war

Never heard this version of the song until today. It has the introduction from the original version, and the guitar solo at the end from the first redux version. This now makes it the best version of the song.

How the hell was a song with these lyrics released as the album opener by an American band as big as Rise Against in 2014? Imagine if they released this today...

No innocent civilians in the planes or towers deserved to die in 9/11 obviously (and I hope everyone agrees here), but what I despise about the event is how the American civil religion lionised it and reacted afterwards. The attack was carried out by a US asset gone rouge and a direct result of US meddling and old school imperial conquest in the Middle East, which included killing many innocent civilians there themselves. The 9/11 attacks were not some unforeseen unprovoked event.

Then there's the response. It's quite clear that the main issue with 9/11 to American leadership was not the number of lives lost, but the fact that it was a successful attack on Americas biggest symbols symbols of global financial and military domination. It was about the message that sent. A successful attack from the "jungle" on the "garden", as old school racist imperialists would say. And how did America respond to that? By invading two countries that had nothing to do with the event, while becoming even closer allies with the country that the majority of 9/11 hijackers were from. Hundreds of thousands killed in Iraq over a lie about WMDs. Afghanistan pillaged for two decades before returning to the exact same position, Taliban rule. Osama was in Afghanistan by the time the US showed up? Yes, and I'm going to be a billionaire tomorrow. More instability, more US funded terrorist groups. The response was just to go and loot and pillage the Middle East 100 times harder with false righteous fury. Like bombing an entire neighborhood because you got mugged by one of its residents.

And that really showed the true character of the US as a country. Just how much bloodlust they had after 9/11. They just wanted to go out and kill a nation, any nation from the region would've sufficed. The were calls on national radio and TV programs for glassing and nuking the entire region. Around 75% of Americans supported the invasion of Iraq at the time. An invasion clearly based on lies. But they didn't care, they just wanted revenge. To kill someone, anyone. If you compare how the US reacted here, to how other countries reacted in the face of hardship, attacks and near civil war (see South Africa during the end of apartheid) it's clear that the character of the US is rotten deep down.

Very interesting how all those "pretend socialists" only exist in the third world, and all the "real socialists" existin the west. Yet all the successful revolutions have been done in the third world by "pretend socialists", and the so called "real socialists" in the west have accomplished nothing. Their biggest success of the "real socialists" in the west being capitalist welfare states or social democracies that rely on old school imperial relationships to fund their welfare in a select few areas.

No Eurocentrism present to this line of thought here at all...

What do you think of Nelson Mandela OP? He was a very good leader, right? You know that he considered Cuba an ally and supported their revolution as Cuba sent troops to fight against the apartheid government in the border wars, took inspiration from Mao and called the Chinese revolution a miracle, thanked the Soviets for giving unending support in the fight against apartheid while receiving the a Lenin Peace Prize? So is Nelson Mandela now a fascist according to your meme?

She was sexually assaulted in the workplace? So LTT is just running an old boys club tech business? No wonder getting women in tech is such a problem. This is absolutely vile and vomit inducing.

I wish I could say I'm surprised, but given my interactions with these kinds of people in the tech industry, sadly I'm not surprised. Reading the twitter thread, I had that sinking feeling and knew that it was going to appear.

Hexbear is actually one of the oldest Lemmy instances, been around for over three years. Due to technical issues around our high number of active users and having to rely on volunteer labour, we have only been able to federate within the last few weeks.

The way they tell it, you'd think everything from DW, to Fox, to Propublica, to straight up AP News articles, are all written by the same people.

Because they are. This isn't even a radical far left idea. Ever heard of "Manufacturing Consent" by Noam Chomsky? That's one of the main arguments, that the media is owned and controlled by the capitalist class.

Using a combined arms NATO style attack tactic for the counter offensive when Ukraine basically has no air force was certainly a very smart and good idea with no potential problems. Especially when attacking entrenched and mined Russian positions. Great idea from the NATO military commander failsons
